Who varnishes there models once painted??

Hello I was given a tin of Vallejo satin varnish spray recently.....was told to use it once models are painted, to protect them.

has anyone used this before??? Bit nervous of using it lol!! heard a few stories about purity seal gw spray ruining models..not sure if that's true.

any advice?? Tips??

I use Vallejo Gloss (as I'm told it's slightly tougher than Satin or Matte) and then any areas I don't want to be shiny, I go over with Vallejo Satin.

They certainly seem less likely to chip afterwards, whether that's just a placebo I don't know.

i clearcoat the hell out of mine. works great, lasts long time.

I don't varnish as a rule unless I want a wet look. I've had to touch up models as a result but only Gargoyles and Termagants which I tend to pick up in handfuls and drop on the floor a lot. I might give that Vallejo stuff a try though.

I used to use purity seal and it's absolutely horrible. You could try it out on a few models that you don't care about to much to see how they turn out.

I personally think painted models need something to help them be more resistant to scratching etc. I use Tamiya ts-80 satin spray on mine and I swear by the stuff. It makes all the colours look baby smooth and gives them a very slight pastel appearance which I really like as I'm not a huge fan of bright shiny colours.

I use Testors spray gloss clearcoat first as a rock hard protective coat then a spray dullcoat to bring it back down to how it should look and finally touch up any wet looking areas with a brush and a coloured clear gloss.
Sounds like more work than it actually is. Protects my miniatures really really well.
Possibly helps cover some of my mistakes too, so bonus for me.

Finally got brave tested on old model, the Vallejo spray satin varnish worked great! Like the effect and will protect the models....now to finish the fire flying hive tyrant.

Thanks sneggy, really I was scared of purity seal from several friends having frosting. But was probably because they did not shake the Tin for 3-5 mins or use it when air was humid..

I use it in a ventilated but heated in door area where I control the climate. Not too cold, not too humid. Shaken well. It's good stuff. Just be careful with it. It's like every other tool we modellers use. You wouldn't just dunk a fine detail brush into a pot of base paint now would you?
