What's the haps in 40k these days?

Hey, Hive, how ya doin'?

Long time, no post.

So... It's been, like, a billion years since I've been in any way clued into the 40k scene. Between confusing supplements, disappointing model sculpts and GW generally rubbing me up the wrong way the hobby just kind of fell to the side and lay forgotten. But recently I've been in the mood to maybe take to the battlefields again with what models I have. I've done a bit of googling on what's hot and what's not but, the internet being the internet, the general consensus I took from it is that everything it both overpowered and underpowered at the same time and GW are the devil. Nothing new there, right? So... forum time! And this just so happens to be my favourite 40k forum so I decided I'd ask here.

Generally, what's the general meta, most recent codexes, the coolest army ideas floating around? Also any general opinions from people would be pretty cool to read too.

Codex release schedule has still been going crazy fast. Since 7th dropped last May or so, we've had Orks, SW, GK, DE, BA, and Crons drop with updated Dexes, and Harlequins just came out with a mini-Dex, while a combined Daemon/CSM Khorne Dex just went up for Preorder.

Eldar Wave Serpent spam and White Scars bikers are still pretty much top of the heap in general, but Nids just won LVO with a Lictor-centric list. Nids in general have gained a lot with the extra options and Formations that were in Shield of Baal: Leviathan.

Of the new Dexes, everyone is expecting strong showings from Necron Canoptek and Destroyer lists, but I don't think they've racked up any big wins yet. Guard (back to the classic Blobs/Russes), Wolves (Drop Pods or TW Spam), and BA (Drop Pods and/or Descent of Angels) also all seem to me to have major potential, but no one's really managed to make them completely click yet.

The Necrons have some really cool options, with a whole new way of putting an Army together called a Decurion. You start with a Core Detachment that's pretty restricted, and then you get to add a bunch of Formations into it, and there are overall Detachment bonuses that stack with the individual Formation bonuses.

CenturionStar is the other big build I can think of off the top of my head. Red Scorpions SM with Sevrin Loth to guarantee Invisibility, GK with Draigo to guarantee Gate, and then a GK Librarian with as many rolls on Divination as possible to try for Perfect Timing, all Joined to 4-5 Centurions. The way Psychic Powers work in 7th, it's not really consistent enough to reliably go the distance at a big Tournament, but in any given match, it's scary as heck.

A Lictor-centric, competitive Tyranid list? Gotta admit, that's probably the last thing I expected to hear. Sounds cool. Talonis would probably be delighted.

Not surprised to see Eldar Serpent Spam still going strong. Seeing Blob/Russ Guard get a mention is heart warming and the new Wolves dex should be fun to flick through. I did notice that there's not nearly as much noise about Tau as there was when I stopped playing. Have they finally lost their crown as kings of the battlefield?

It certainly helped the Lictorshame list that Sean is an excellent player, but it's also in part due to it being a really good match for the missions that are common these days.

Tau have definitely dropped in the standings. Still up there, but a couple of the MC nerfs killed their DeathStar build and reduced the flexibility of Riptides. Then they lost both their Battle Bro Allies. At the same time, the game started shifting to require even more mobility, and the combination has caused a significant hit to their effectiveness.

The Deathstorm boxset is worth looking into if you like Blood Angels, they have a cool codex, not mega powerfull but fun and well laid out. It comes with the new Warrior sprue which has literally everything available to them on it.

All the other plastic kits are good i've found. The pod i don't have and there's plenty of threads around explaining why some of us don't.

Our codex is bland, and with the overpriced Shield of Baal book it gets less bland. While the last time i played was 2nd edt i can't comment on 3/4/5 edts i know a codex should be better than this still. But we do as proven have a codex that can still do some stuff in a competitive enviroment.
