My first Tyranid Painted. C&C Welcome and appreciated!

Hey guys, I just finished up my first Tyranid unit, a lonely hormagaunt. I figured out I'd start with this as I'm not as worried about screwing up as I would be with something more like a carnifex or something.


I learned a LOT with my first minis. I tried to tougch up every single time I spilled onto the screaing skull, and going on I'm going to wait till I have the carapace and the black for the claws done before I retouch up the screaming skull. I'm not quite happy with the tranisition of the reds on the scything talons/hooves. I could probably change up some things about the carroburg crimson shade application, as I think it didn't turn out as well as it could have. I'm going to try out Base>Shade>Layer next, to see if it really makes a mini that I am happy with quality wise. This mini took me 3-3.5 hours, and while that is a lot of time, I'd rather it look good than just have some paint on it. 

Also, I really need another brush! The 0 series 7 brush I was using is great for a lot of parts of the mini, but the very small details like the tongue, the feathering. and some of the edge highlighting is just too fine to do with a size 0 (at least with my brush control!)

Its a good start. I like your feathering and the colours are bang on. The colour transition on the claws is a bit obvious but you'll get better at it the more you paint and it will look fine as it is on the tabletop when you field a swarm of them. Look for some tutorials on blending techniques. Even drybrushing can help with transitions and its easy. Definitely get some different size/type of brushes and experiment with them.  Definitely give washes a try.

Thanks for the input! I checked your blog out and it is really awesome, if some of the modeling stuff is a bit beyond me.

I tried hitting the claws with a wash of nuln oil and it made the color transitions work a lot better. Not exactly good yet, but a lot better. After a few tries my skin looks a lot better too. One thing I like about your models is the shading in the crevices of the skin. Since I'm not using a wash on my skin, what can I do to get a good look in the recesses but keep the pale tone to the flesh?

You could try only washing the recesses. This can be tricky, time consuming and often leaves 'tide marks'. You could try painting your skin tone lighter than you want it to be and using thinned out washes.

The easiest way I've found is to put a wash on, let it dry and then drybrush your original skin tone over the top. Drybrushing is quick and will leave the darker tones in the recesses but the raised areas of the model will still be the colour you want them. Of course, this takes longer too.

Use the IMG tags to post your pics. If you have photo bucket, not sure if your site does it, you can just click on the IMG tag and it copies the link for you, so all you have to do is just click on Paste. Monkeychukka is correct. Post the pics and you will get more responses.

3. Choose a scheme that has fewer steps for your little guys, as you will be painting dozens of them. Save the fancy stuff for larger models and HQ's
