So I emailed GW's White Dwarf team to see if I could get some answers to some rules conundrums I've faced. I got a pretty promising response (at least I think).

Hey Sean,
I have forwarded both your emails on to the rules team to take a look at. If they think your questions need explaining they'll add them to the next set of FAQs and erratas.
Dan
Here is a copy of both the emails:
Grombrindal,
I am an avid Tyranid player and I am looking for some “official” answers to a few rules conundrums that have cropped up in many of my games. Here goes:
General 40K
1. Challenges – If my lone Swarmlord assaults a Chapter Master with his retinue and declares a challenge (which the Chapter Master begrudgingly accepts), can the retinue swing on the Swarmlord or does the retinue stand and cheer on their Chapter Master? Under the rules for challenges I believe that a retinue (or squad) can only have wounds spill over to the actual challenge if the Swarmlord had a Tyrant Guard and the retinue killed him with wounds left over.
2. Psychic Powers – Do ALL Witchfire Powers (including Focused Witchfire Powers) need to roll To-Hit? The question comes up with the Maleceptor’s Psychic Overload power. I am under the impression that to successfully cast this power I first have to generate enough Warp Charges (rolling at least two 4+s with the dice I choose from my Warp Charge pool), then I have to roll To-Hit to see if I actually “hit” my target, and then lastly the enemy unit would then roll the Leadership Test. Is this correct?
3. Blast/Barrage Weapons – When positioning a Small/Large Blast Template over an enemy unit that is on different levels in a Ruin, are all models under the template hit even if they are on different levels? Or are just the models on a specific level of my choosing hit?
4. Terrain – If I have a unit in terrain and I shoot at an enemy unit that is also within the same piece of terrain does the enemy unit get a Cover Save?
Tyranids
1. Assuming that I am using a Battle-Forged army with a standard Combined Arms Detachment, does a spawned unit of Termagants from a Tervigon have the Objective Secured rule?
2. If a unit of 3 Biovores shoot their Spore-Mine Launchers and the first Large Blast Template scatters off the targeted enemy unit, are 3 d3 Spore Mines generated (a d3 for each Biovore), or is it just 1 d3 even though there are 3 shooting Biovore?
3. How exactly does the new Instinctive Fire rule actually work? Do you measure the closest enemy unit from each gun in which some guns will shoot at one target and some at another, or do you just find the one closest enemy unit from any gun and then all fire at that target? If the latter is true does the weapons that are facing away from the enemy unit still fire “through” the model? Lastly, after removing casualties from the original enemy unit that was the closest; do the remaining shots/wounds then have to be allocated to the now closer enemy unit?
Finally, is there any chance that the Tyranids can see a new codex soon? I know it’s only been about a year since the current codex was released but I feel that Tyranids still need to be reworked. When I play them I just don’t get that “polished” feel that I do with Eldar, Marines, Tau, etc. The way the Tyranids codex works in 7th edition feels clunky as the Tyranids feel like an assault first army but yet they move slow and really don’t assault that well. Will we get more Psyker Powers next time? I feel while our current 7 are good the fact that we can only choose from those 7 is severely limiting.
The other email:
How exactly does Strikedown work on melee weapons? For an example, let’s say I have a Dimachaeron who uses his Leap ability in the assault phase. According to this rule it grants the Dimachaeron a Hammer of Wrath hit at +1S and gives the hit the Strikedown special rule. The way I understand it is if I cause an unsaved wound (or if the enemy saves this wound) with my Hamer of Wrath attack I would force the enemy unit to “move as if they are in difficult terrain” until its next turn. Would this mean that the enemy unit strikes at initiative 1 even though the unit is not actually moving? If my enemy has grenades would he negate this effect? How is this supposed to work?
Next can a Monstrous Creature fire both his weapons (should he have 2) when firing Overwatch?
There are probably some questions in there that you guys have the answers too, but hey these are my emails and questions. I hope to get some kind of official response soon. I will keep you guys posted, if your interested.
