Some players take it all too seriously

Where I stay, the game store is an hour's drive, and it can be troublesome bringing our stuff down. So I notice one of the other players lives about two blocks from me.  Last week I got his number, and today I called to ask if he wants a lift to the store this weekend. There are some games going on.

Me: You want a lift? I can swing by and pick you up.

Him: It depends, are you playing?

Me: Yep.

Him: Then I can't.

Me: How come?

Him: You might see what I'm bringing and then tailor your list. It's happened before.

Me: I won't. And it isn't a tournament or anything.

Him: Sorry, but I don't know you well enough to trust you.

Honestly, it's like he was protecting nuclear launch codes or something. I can only imagine how he acts in an actual tournament.

Wow, thats kinda nuts. In my area we deliberatly tailor our lists to make games more fun. Like, if I'm bringing my Tyranid Air Force list I'll let everyone know so they can have adequate AA, and the only guy in our area who brings Imperial Knights warns us first, lol.

OP: does this neighbor know how cool you currently are (re:necron thread)? His loss by a long shot. Heck, if they have any skill, LET you tailor a list. But give them a few minutes to google a counter to your list. They don't sound like WAAC anyways. Not bad, but often a bore. I hope the rest of your meta is cooler. Hope you get some games in.

As someone who writes lists before even finding opponents the thing I don't like is:

ME: "Want to play a game?"
THEM: "Depends, what army are you running?"
ME: "Tyranids why?"
THEM: "Okay, I'm going to add tons of flamers and missiles, let me write a list then we'll play."

At that point I'm pretty much like forget it. My conversations now go as follows:

ME: "Want to play a game?"
THEM: "Depends, what army are you running?"
ME: "Okay never mind. Have a good one."

Haha, I did not realize that my local meta was the weird one XD.

I mean, its supposed to be a fun game, and 40k has so many balance issues... we just all decided (without talking about it) that it was better to give advance warning so that no one is setting up for a very expensive game of rock-paper-scissors, heh.

I guess it only works because no one abuses it (I've NEVER had someone come with a ridiculous list that only works as the perfect counter to mine).

That is some kind of special bat (please do not swear) crazy, I do love beating tailored list however. Go ahead and bring your flamers, your missile launchers, your flag of two headed bear, still wont save you. Then again I'm the kind of player that will surrender a game I know I will win for a chance to play the Ultramarine player that just walked in.

The only way I like taylored lists if if I say "Hey I'm bringing X and want to find it's weaknesses, build against it." Otherwise, no. I play my son more often then anyone and we don't even share our lists ahead of time. Part of the fun of the game is trying to make the list you built work against what was just plopped on the table.

I often just paste my list i'm playing into messenger, saves me showing them when i get there. Plus it's a good way of seeing what the opponent is like.

Sounds a bit odd. Is he afraid you will use your x-ray vision to peer into his figure cases to determine his exact army list? If he is afraid of you tailoring to his unknown army list how about you play different people at the club?
I'd jump at the chance of being given a lift to the club, assuming I knew you of course.

if he want to play it like this, let him act on false intel. Bring flyrants and skyblight then roll over this (please do not swear) the same way king ghidorah does with the JDF.

after a conversation like that, I wouldn't want to play the guy. You can imagine how he'll be when things aren't going his way.

When a dude has all his self esteem tied to the performance of his toy soldiers, it's going to be a bad game, win or lose.

Yea applying that sun tzu Intel stratagem is IMO a bit much. Craft world Uthwe's survival is not in jepardy because a raiding force of emperor's children brought specific weapons to deal with their formidable wave serpent division. Not that it will help much. He may have bad experience from a previous store is my most optimistic guess.

In my case OP I probably take you up for the offer but you probably have to cope with my non stop babbling about tyranids on our way there lol.

Wave serpent spam, or any spam really constitutes more spam imo. You spam, I spam, and before you know it every wave serpent and flying hive tyrant in the sector can be found on this sorry little patch of dirt. Don't get me wrong we all have units we like to use, and I'm a huge proponent of themed armies. But a.. but there's a point.
