One with would think with 30ish options within the codex (this is AFTER cutting out about 5) we SHOULD be covered for everything we need. Sadly that isnt the case. So, instead of new units/MCs why not just fix what we have? Things like the following:
- Make Trygons and their tunnels work: Have the Trygon tunnel be something you can plan around. Like put a unit in the tunnel, the turn the Trygon appears have it so they deploy from the Trygon's base as if he was a drop pod (so within 6"). From that point on any non flying/non-MC unit that is still in reserve (1 per turn/tunnel) can use it to deploy (again, as a drop pod). Make Trygons beasts and 180pts and you are golden.
- Make Stealers scary: Give them assault grenades, a 4+ save and maybe something else to make them amazing in CC (note: Not just good, but REALLY good). Stealers used to be the single scariest CC unit in the game. Each edition since 2nd has seen them get worse and worse. Now they are just a bit above a standard ork boy in CC effectiveness while being twice as expensive.
- Completely Revamp the Ranged Weapon Section: This has been a freaking mess since 5th. In the 4th ed book there were only 7 guns but they had FAR more use and variation than the 32 in the 5th ed book. Revert everything back to 4th eds stats (but with a fixed stat, not based on model carrying it). So Venom Cannons would be Str 9, AP4, Assault 2, 36" Range, Deathspitters would be Str 5/AP5, Assault 1, blast, 18" range and maybe even convert the Rupture Cannon into a fully fledged Bio Cannon that can only be taken by the Tyrannofex (str 10, ap3, assault 6, 48" range). You could honestly fix this book by fixing this section of the book. Harpies now have another (great) roll with a twin linked venom cannon, Tyrannofexs have a real reason to exist, taking something OTHER than dual devourers on units that can take ranged weapons would happen again, etc.
- Different bugs are allowed to have different stats!: Apparently EVERYONE has to have WS/BS 3. Why? This makes no freaking sense AT ALL! Maybe make the Haruspex and Toxicrene WS 5 and beasts. Maybe give the Tyrannofex the Exocrines rule of "if it stands still it can fire at BS4". Put the Hive Guard back to WS/BS 4. Honestly the ONLY MCs that should be W/BS3 are Tervigons. Thats it. Literally everything else should have stats appropriate to what it does on the field. Same goes for everything else.
- Upgrade Prices: Why in gods name are the upgrades for smaller bugs 100% of their base cost? Hormagaunts would be pretty much perfect if their upgrades were just 1pts each. Also, having an upgrade outside of Toxin Sacs and Adrenal Glands worth taking would be cool.
- Give us useful multi wound units!: Sslyth from the current DE book are the perfect Tyranid Warrior. So, with that in mind make Warriors WS/BS 5/3, Str/T 5, 2 wounds, Init 5, 3 attacks, 4+ save, come with a devourer, scything talons, 25pts. Done. Pyrovores are on the same base as a Carnifex, so why not give them Grotesque stats? WS/BS 4, Str/T5, 3 wounds, init 3, 3 attacks, 4+ save, torrent flamer, and some special acid rule in CC. Again, DONE! Raveners can be kept the same but made 25pts base coming with rending claws.
Our current book is such a freaking mess I could just keep going and going. The fact of the matter is it honestly would be easy to fix this book, GW just doesnt care what the rules are as they think the only thing we (as Nid players...or 40k players in general I guess) care about is how things look. Sadly they are so out of touch with that mindset its not even funny. I dont play 40k anymore because of that fact. I still have all my stuff, wont be selling it and I will be more than happy to come back if/when they actually put effort into rules. Until that happens its on to other games that DO care about rules.
