Am I the only person who enjoys our new codex?

I have been getting the general vibe that there is a tremendous amount of disdain for our current codex and that most people feel quite negatively towards it. I have been starting to play a lot more 40k recently, specifically with my Tyranids, and have been having incrementally more and more fun. Every unit I run feels like it has a distinct duty and role to play and it's fun and challenging trying to out think and out maneuver my opponents to maximize my armies potency. I tend to play a lot of marine armies(and necrons) so maybe its just nice not to have an answer to every threat within every squad in my army, but it just feels right for Tyranids that squad X is designed for a Y field role and squad A is designed to combat threat B. I dunno. Just always gets depressing spending too much time on the Tyranid Hive. Anyone else agree with me? Or am I just crazy? Crazy is a distinct possibility:P

I think its more that a lot of people here are vet tyranid players, and wish for a return to greener pastures. Like remember when genestealers and lictors were feared on the table top, truly feared..those were good days. And remember how we use to have genetic templates for each gribbly enabling us to truly tailor our army to our style of play..yea that was fluffy and made my army really scream unique... those were the days.

I think there are couple of possibilities: 1. You haven't hit the hard counters to 'nids and had to face our weaknesses, 2. you've found some secret recipe for success that eludes the rest of us, 3. you are the best plastic toy general in the grim dark.

We get this exact thread about 1x or 2x a month. No, we are not negative and being here shouldn't be depressing. I have found the exact opposite. Despite my whine fest yesterday, I typically feel pretty positive about my space bugs. The hive has usually picked me up when I got it handed to me particularly hard. I find this forum to be full of great advice and a community that has really pulled together despite a general disappointment in the codex. coredump and gigasnail in particular, among many others, have made me a way better player than in my pre-hive days. If you want to whine you can find that anywhere. If you want honest opinions about what has worked and not worked for others, it's here too. We have a few builds that work really well. Some that don't work at all. And a lot somewhere in the middle. No need to reinvent the wheel when you see how it worked/didn't for others.

I like bits of it, but I really miss Ymgarls and our other deployment options.

More of the people with a real dislike for the codex are the more "competitive" players who go up against tough lists and feel that they have little option but to spam our best units to have any decent hope of a win.

The more casual of us are a bit more free to experiment but yup, the book has some good stuff but then some proper "What the..." moments like a Tyranid Prime having no winged option and the Trygon tunnel being a bit of a creppe stop-gap delivery system with the removal of our spore pods.

True, but the game has changed quite a bit since even I started(ten years ago now). In the 3 editions I have been actively playing in, each one brought along different challenges and changes for all armies. Now I feel that Tyranids are the only army where every unit has a clear role and needs to be utilized accordingly. Yes, the old 4th edition book was incredible and allowed for a mind blowing amount of customization in individual units. But now, yes, we do not have the same level of customization, but what we do have is about twice the units in our codex that can be fielded effectively. And for me, each new unit fills the role of a unit that had to be specially tailored with many different biomorphs to reach the same level of effectiveness. For me, the Tyranid army has never felt better.

I'm too tired to properly articulate my opinion here but I would say that although our codex has many problems, the introduction of maelstrom has acted as a significant balancing act. I have come up against superior forces a few times but have played the objectives game and avoided being tabled to snatch a win on more than one occasion.

Not only have I taken part in a campaign tournament (1750p) but often play against other players at another club who are always wanting someone to practice their latest (1750 or 1850p) tournament list with. Basically, only my first few games were casual and I come against some evil stuff often now, but, thanks to maelstrom I have been doing so much better than popular codex opinion would suggest.

I don't play with any formations and use a single CAD but something about our codex and maelstrom has just clicked for me. Know what? I think if every game I've played was just pure deathmatch, no objectives, I think my win/loss ratio would be the opposite of what it is currently.

What do you see as the role of the Haruspex, Pyrovore, OOE, Genestealers, Trygon, Trygon Prime, Hormogaunt, Ravener broods? What do they do that is unique? I never take any except on rare occasion. You can make stealers work but only if you build specifically for it.

I played tournaments alot many years ago but have mellowed into a more casual player. I'll hit my LGS about once a month, but my fiance and good friend as well tend to rotate every weekend playing different scenarios and missions. We always adhere strictly to the rules, but overall, we get competitive while keeping the game enjoyable. Really the only army I feel hard counters Tyranids are Dark Eldar. Their whole army can wound everything we have with massed poison shooting. Yeah, my fiance owns my face at 40k:P But still, I tend to make her work for it.

Out of all those units you just mentioned I have really only used hormagaunts of recent, and it was more because I had some spare points and didn't know what to do with them than anything.

Funny story, Pyrovores arn't that bad. When you hike a squad of 3 guys across the field with your main force and your enemy know that they're, "just those (please do not swear) flamer bugs," they make it across the field and become a pleasant surprise for you and a nasty one for your enemy. As far as our CC units go, I run my hormagants naked with genestealers following close behind. With a couple venomthropes behind that your genestealers WILL make it to CC and they WILL mutilate what they hit, same as before. I've learned to synergize my forces with this new codex. And I still love Ravenors. Beasts are probably my favorite unit type in the whole game. Trygon prime is incredible and pretty much one makes it into all of my lists with the something of obliterax(I know I butchered that, but the named bonesword lashwhip) and he wrecks everything! S7 and I7 is fantastic:) Anyways, to your final point, I never liked a full stealer list back in 4th edition and I still don't like it now, but stealers still work, and they work well.

I have used my Hormaguants in only maybe 2 games. I have never once used any of the others you listed.

I personally love this codex much more than the last. Yeah I miss the spore pods but the idea of a motionless monstrous creature "drop pod" was pretty stupid in my opinion. I would like them to just allow us the ability to deep strike half our units the first turn, no model. The Doom was an alright unit though to me it was feast or famine (for me he seemed to be famine more often than not). The only unit I really miss was the Ymgaril Genestealers. I loved those things, they really kept my opponents on their toes.

With this new codex I really like a lot of the new units. I love the Haruspex (yeah I said it), the Hive Crone, Exocrine, just to name a few. I feel like this codex has more flavor and is just more all around fun to play. Like Mauler I play casual too and that seems make this codex (and edition) much more enjoyable than the last.

My only gripes about the codex is the lack of imagination and creativity. It is a very bland codex, and when you compare it to Tau, Eldar, and especially Space Marines, it makes you wonder if there was any actual thought put into our book at all. Now I am not saying we should have a Eldar equivalent powered dex, but if you look at the dexes I mentioned previously, they are just so spot on with just how each of those armies should be portrayed on the table.

I am having fun with 40k though, so I guess I must be enjoying our book somewhat lol.

Codex is middle of the road and flat. Doesn't mean it's awful, means it's middle of the road and flat. It will do great in a casual setting, you'll roll noobs and care bears aplenty. It only starts to show the cracks when you move out of this arena and up to a higher tier of opponent. You can still put up a decent showing even then but it begins to narrow your options down severely, and there are still things we are at a giant disparity against.

I swear I'm going to cut/paste this to my phone and PC desktop because we really do get this exact thread about once or twice a month.
