So now that we are nearly 5 months in (or 1/4 of the way through the edition if this one only lasts as long as 6th), what are peoples thoughts? Do you like it? How do you think 'nids have faired? Do you think it an improvement?
I, for one, like the new edition. I think it corrected some things that needed to be. I think that, despite my earlier protests, FMCs actually got quite a bit better even with the hit to VS. I like the new Psychic phase though I do think the total number of dice should be limited, much like fantasy. I like that vehicles have become more resilient. APC and the like should have more of an impact on the game and I'm glad that they do. I like the way terrain works now. I like that rough terrain is a flat -2" modifier. I like the way allies and FOC work now.
I don't like that assaulting wasn't fixed or even addressed. I don't like the harsh penalty to charging through cover when Initiative is such a big deal for some armies and armies that don't need the boost (SM and Orks) have grenades in all the units that matter. I don't like the nerf to SMASH, I can see why they did it, but think that something less severe would have been better. Our big MCs low # of attacks (usually 3) and poor weapon skill make SMASH something I rarely do anymore. I think IC should not be able to join units from other armies, things like Draigo with GoI is just too crazy. That silliness needs to stop.
As the ruckus has calmed and the dust settled I find that my 'nids have actually done better. I don't know if it's that the rules have made us stronger (I don't see how), that other armies have gotten weaker, that I'm getting better with our codex, or some other impact that isn't readily apparent.
What says the hive?
