Advice/caution switching from Nids to Marines???

Does anyone have any words of advice or caution for a Tyranids player thinking about switching to Space Marines ? ? ?

I started Ultramarines after my Tyranids, and I absolutely love the difference in play style of the two armies.

I'm thinking Vanilla marines. Yeah, same here - the play style difference I perceive is what's making me consider the switch. What aspects do you like better or like less?

Along with my nids I have space marines that can be used as Salamanders (my favorite marine chapter-but not often with Vulkan if it can be avoided) and a bike army (my favourite style of marine army - but not with Khan). Though my marines play better in 7th they are sitting in boxes as well after the disgrace that was the nid release at the end of 6th - that is when I stopped playing/buying 40K.

Space marines are pretty fun to model. You have a lot more options in how you put them together than nids.

My biggest word of caution is to be careful about overdoing it. If you put too much equipment on your characters they become overcosted quickly.

Other than that. Space Marines are one of the most internally balanced codecies out there. And they have the largest selection of units both from the codex itself and from forgeworld.

The best advice I can give is to not get rid of your tyranids if you don't have to.

Like many people here I too have a marine army. I enjoy playing marines from time to time, but I still enjoy playing tyranids as well. It's like chocolate and vanilla ice cream; sure, you prefer one over the other, but it's nice to have the other every now and then.

Marines are a very forgiving army. It doesn't matter what is going on, marines are never out of the fight. Unlike tyranids where I can look at the army list and set up and know if I've got a good shot at winning or if I have an uphill battle.

For me I love the fact I have such a vast varitety in units and different builds. Now with 7th, you can litterally do a pure Alpha strike army of drop pods, which is what I want to eventually run a lot (Only own 2 pods currently), as I have read a lot of Marine books and love the image of them dropping in to catch the enemy completely off guard.

Ultramarines intrest me the most due to their ability to adapt to almost every situation.

One thing I think you could expect is opponents making fewer strategic mistakes against you because everybody knows how space marines work (armour saves, armour values, weapons, stat lines etc) but relatively few people have a really solid knowledge of tyranids.

Otherwise, enjoy the long range, high strength, low AP guns

I would echo infornography and treat the change like you were just starting out in the hobby. Get 500 points, play it a bit to see how things work, build on what you like. My alt Imperium army is SoB, so I can still shoot things, and get mopped in CC, which gives me a sad but internal smile as that is what I am now use to with our beloved Nids. The change in style is supper nice, with saves and powerful shooty stuff and all. And vehicles, oooooo sweet sweet vehicles.

Now to raid the fridge for some ice cream, flavor be damned.

You'll find it an entirely new experience. You will be much harder to kill. You'll also find that you are more of a generalist army rather than an army of specialists. I got rid of my power armour army (Dark Angels) b/c although I won it felt like I was hanging on for the win rather than going out and taking it. I was always on my back foot. I like to play more aggressively. While I was winning I wasn't having fun. You have to know your own playstyle. I find more satisfaction in a playstyle that fails in what I'm attempting to do and thereby loses the battle than I do in winning a game where the win is because I weathered the other players storm. I prefer being the storm.

the great thing about having multiple armies is that no matter where you are on GW's eternal buff/nerf codex cycle, you're likely to have at least one playable army.

Bikes or drop pods, or even a mix really help capture the feel of being on the offensive. There are plenty of other options if you like to turtle though.
