FMC wings... when do you ignore them

Ok, so it's established that you ignore wings for LOS. Note that it specifically is in the LOS section.

I haven't found anywhere else where it says wings are ignored. In the FMC section it states that models can move beneath a swooping FMC if they physically fit. 
Last night an opponent wanted to basically move 3 of my FMCs out of the way (or at least pivot them) so that he could position his Stompa between the three. 
We thought about it, checked the rule book - couldn't find anything, then rolled off.
But in the cold light of the morning after - with renewed whining about FMCs ringing loud across the scarred battlefield - I'm still left unsure what the RAW/RAI is here.

Any thoughts?

Unless tank shocking you should never mode enemy models, especially pivoting an FMC which needs to maintain a facing for it's swoop arc.

I'd say it came under the 'as long as it fits' and he shouldn't have moved there to be honest. Enemy models are effectively impassable terrain. Would you let him walk it under a bridge that was only 3" high?

yeah, that was pretty much my stance. Turns out the group basically want to house-rule it to ignore FMC wings at all times whilst not ignoring the wings of, say, a Vendetta. So, "no, you can't walk your Carnifex under my flying tin can, but would you mind moving your model for a few minutes?"

For the sake of regular games I'm happy enough to concede the point but I do take slight umbrage at being told that this is just me 'misunderstanding the rules'. Hence me asking the question on here... just want to check whether I am being blind and calling it wrong, or if the moral high ground is all mine. It's a sweet view from up here if a little lonely

You definitely need space. Silly really when it could be flying at any height, but the rule is there so you don't have to move models which are extremely dependent on facing.

This is the game where aeroplanes are in pistol range after all.

You only ignore wings in the one specific case the Rules tell you: When drawing LoS to the winged Model in question. For all other purposes (passing "over" another Model for Vector Striking, drawing LoS past a winged Model to hit something behind, moving underneath, whatever), the wings count.

I don't know if it's a case of people just crying about FMCs, whether it was different in 6th, or people thinking 'if my stompa can't move through you, why can't he swat you like a bug'

Cheers for the replies though - I'd been told it was just me 'misunderstanding the rules' - so vindication is always nice.

Especially in the case of flyrants where wings often represent one of our weapon options as claws/Talons, it's ludicrous to just push through them.

I thought vector striking had to be a model your base went over, I could be wrong though. For measuring for synapse, do you use wings or base? That's a significant difference. I always played that was from the base only, I basically ignore the wings.

Base for effects range. VS there is some wiggle room for MC to argue because if the way it's worded, but, it's probably supposed to be base too.

Rules are pretty clear, they have to fit underneath in order to move underneath. (and still avoid the base)

Meaurements, however, go from the base; so the wings can hang over the edge of the board, but they don't count for VS purposes.

Yeah, why even bother having wings on the model then. Rip them off. Wait, why bother even having models at all. Lets just have bases with a floating head for LoS.

Once you start down that road, where do you stop?

You stop because the game is played because we love the models and backstory, not just because we want to win at the game. That isn't the case for some people, but for those people I wonder why they bother taking the time to buy, build and paint these models if they aren't even interested in them. They ought as well just play with paper cut-outs on bases with names written on them. 'Unit 01', 'Unit 02'.

Thanks for the replies fellas. As a rule we've always played base for any kind of measuring or for VS. The laughable part about this issue is I'm being accused of not playing 'in the spirit of the game' and having a 'whiff of the WAAC' about me and my gaming style!!
Might just focus on painting and modelling for the rest of the year!

I would gently ask them if winning is so important to them they are willing to ignore a clearly written rule. I would even offer to ignore the clearly written rule if winning is that important to them.

No wait, I have a better idea...:

Try and work in the phrase "If you would prefer to win at the cost of ignoring a clearly written rule, I suppose we can." Then after a short pause "Are there any other rules you want to ignore that will help you win?"

haha love the passive agressive approach. But yes I agree, If it is your movement phase, my models do not move. It never ceases to amaze me what kind of BS people try and pull regarding the rules.
