new to forgeworld stuff need tips

hi fellow hive minds,

The forgeworld openday was a blast and got myself a dimaceron a malanthrope and a Barbed Hierodule.

but this being my first forgeworld project makes me kinda uneasy. especially the Barbed Hierodules head makes me nervous.

How do i remove the head from his sprue thingy?

And what is the best way to magnetize/pin thees guys?

Grats on your purchases.

Keep in mine to wash all the parts with a mild soap before assembly/gluing/painting to clean the release agent off the parts.

Should be able to just use a pair of clippers to carefully remove the parts from the sprue, same as any model bits on sprue. Be careful on thinner parts though as resin tends to crack if you 'spread' the cut area too much. Basically, if you have a thick area you need to cut through, cut chunks out before going deeper (if using clippers).. or use a small hobby saw to get a clean cut straight through.

Depends on what parts you want to magnetize? My hierodules aren't magnetized at all, don't see a point in doing so. As for dima, I dunno whether or not I would magnetize it. I know we have some people around the forums with them, maybe they'll chime in on whether or not they think it's practical to do so. Same with the Malanthrope, I don't really see much of a need for it.

As for pinning, just use a pin-vise and small drill bits to make the holes and insert wire. Same as with anything.

I would second everything Rehkal said. The big thing is to take your time and don't clip too close to the model. It's also very important to wash the resin after your get all the flash and mould lines. I've seen horror stories of people painting up their models only to have the paint flake off in chunks because they didn't wash the mould release agent off the model. I got a big cooking bowl and filled it with moderately warm (not hot) water and dish soap. I let it sit for a couple hours then lightly scrubbed with an old (less abrasive) toothbrush.

I also magnetized my Dimachaeron. It wasn't tough to do and it makes it much easier to transport and paint. For the rending/whipping claws in just used a 5mm magnet. Worked like a champ. The split talons were too big though so I pinned them using a 1/4 inch wooden dowel ($0,79 at Lowes) and then used an off center magnet in the socket to keep the arm from rotating. For the body/torso connection I used another dowel in the center of the torso then an off center pin from a safety pin to prevent rotating about the dowel. I just glued everything else on. I recommend waiting to glue the chest and cranium until you've finished painting it. I've got picture of the whole process in the link below. Good luck and enjoy! I'm a huge fan of the model.

i've found a hobby saw or jeweler's saw works well on the thick pieces of resin, like pour vents. annoying.

and yes, for the love of all that's unholy clean your parts well.

Keep the chunks and you can use them as terrain, tank traps I have a huge bag of them, which kind of shows how bad my FW habit is lol

I would not bother pinning or magnetize the malenthrope or the Barbed Hierodule just glue them together, I am not sure about the dimaceron as I do not have one yet.
