Had a 750pt unbound allowed tourney, only restrictions were no SH/GC; and no AV14. Here is the thread where folks helped me figure out what to take:
thetyranidhive.proboards.com/thread/47472/750-pts-restrictions-brainstorming
The scoring was a bit different. There were 3 games, each game used the same 3 missions, but rotated them between Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary.
Winning the primary was 5pts, secondary 3pts, tertiary 1pt. If a mission was tied, no one got the points.
(here is the tricky part...) You also got 3 points for winning the game. The person that won the primary won the game; if the primary was tied, then the person that won the secondary won the game, etc.
So, if you won the primary, but lost the secondary and tied the tertiary, you got 5 pts for the primary, and 3 points for winning. Your opponent got 3 points for the secondary.
There was also an extra point for tabling your opponent, and a point for killing a unit on turn 1.
Missions:
Objectives: There were 5 objectives, 1-4 were in the center of each table quarter, 5 was in the table center. Control more objectives at end of game to win this mission.
Table Quarters: If you have more units (not points) in a table quarter, you control that quarter. Control more quarters at the end of the game to win this mission.
"Maelstrom": Modified ala BAO. Each turn roll 1D6 twice. 1-4 control that objective, 5-6 kill enemy unit. Get points each turn for completing maelstrom goals, have the most points at the end of the game to win this mission.
I ended up taking
Flyrant
Flyrant
Crone
Harpy
Game 1:
Primary: Table quarters
Secondary: Maelstrom
Tertiary: Objectives
Bad guy: Tau
Riptide (happened to take skyfire...)
3 broadsides in a unit. 8 twinlinked shots each
3 crises suits in a unit. Blasters? (again, 8 shots, but not twinlinked)
Pregame: My plan was to ignore the Riptide, and just jink whatever he shot at; and try and hammer the Bsides first.
And before you ask; yes, I did completely forget to roll and/or use my psy powers or warlord trait. I do this with some embarrassingly frequency.
TURN 1
I won and elected to go first because I really wanted to be in the air when he started shooting.
Crone flew 24" next to crises suits flamed them. 1 wound
Flyrants 24 shots on Bsides... 1 wound
Harpy... whatever
He ended up firing everything at the Crone, took 4 wounds.
TURN 2
Crone VS the Bsides and fly off the board. Bsides make 4++ save
Flyrants 24 shots on Bsides... 2 wounds. Now lets get this straight, I was shooting okay, and he was saving like a BOSS. Out of like 35 wounds he missed 3 2+ saves. His luck was annoying...
Harpy... whatever
Then... he fails his Ld check, and rolled high enough to run off the board. But... had just happened to move his riptide behind the Bsides, so they had to run around.
Then... on his turn, he *again* fails morale, and the Bsides run off the board. Well, I guess that balances all the 2+ saves he made....
The riptide and crises suits shoot at Harpy, and do 2ish wounds.
TURN 3
Crone flys on and hides like a baby behind some BLoS terrain and thinks small thoughts.
Flyrants and Harpy bank hard to stay on the board and get shots on the Crises suits.
Harpy...whatever
Flyrant, 12 shots, kicks butt, 4 unsaved wounds. Only 1 crises suit left, and with 1 wound left.
Flyrant, in a fit of overkill...12 shots....7-8 wounds caused... saves like a frickin' BOSS.... still alive!!
TURN 4
Everything glides, I move out and take 2 objectives and get units in 3 table quarters, oh, and bloody obliterate that damn Crises suit.
I even took some shots at the Riptide.... don't think I did anything.
I think he went after the Crone... but whatever he did, nothing died.
I win Primary and Tertiary and game. 5+1+3 for 9 points.
GAME 2:
Primary: Objectives
Secondary: Table Quarters
Tertiary: Maelstrom
Bad Guy: Eldar
Wraithknight CC
Wraithknight CC
Stormtalon
Stormtalon
Pregame: So, plan was to kill the storm talons, and stay away from the WKs until it was time to take objectives. Obviously, he plan was to save the talons long enough to kill some FMCs.
Oh, I did manage to remember my psy powers, and got Psy Scream (and other stuff that didn't matter) (I either forgot, or didn't care about warlord traits)
The only thing important about the map, is we each has a tall BLOS terrain piece in the center of our deployment zone.
It became painfully obvious we were both jockying for the Aircraft Alpha Strike.
I won the die, and let him set up first, hoping he would take first turn.
He set up, and let me go first. He hid a WK behind his center BLOS piece, decided to DS his other WK, and the talons were in reserve.
I put my harpy behind my tall BLOS, and deployed the other FMCs wherever.
TURN 1:
Flyrants move 24" and get a bead on the hiding WK. 24 shots.... 0 wounds. (yay....plan is working...lull him into over confidence)
Crone flys up into position to VS next turn.
Harpy... whatever
He moves up the WK.
TURN 2:
Sneaky (please do not swear).... I now can't VS the WK *and* fly off the board.
Flyrants and Crone all fly off the board
WK DS in on objective near my deployment zone on left side.
Both talons Zoom on 36" down the right side of the board...
[ A brief interlude here. As we will all recall, I left they harpy *completely safe* behind that large, tall, LoS blocking piece of terrain. Now, if you will also recall, *my* flyrants were able to move 24" to get to the 36" line and see his WK on turn 1 even when it was "completely safe behind the BLOS terrain". One would think that *maybe* that would be a clue that maybe.. just maybe... my Harpy was not quite as 'safe' as I would hope.
Nope.. came as a complete surprise to me when both Talons got LoS to my poor Harpy
Whatever...]
Talon 1 starts shooting, Harpy starts jinking
Talon 2 starts shooting, Harpy keeps jinking.... takes 3 wounds total. (failed grounding check, then remembered he wasn't swooping)
Opponent then casually mentions he was hoping to get the 5 wounds and win the game... *HOLY SARDINES BATMAN*... I had completely spaced on the fact that losing that Harpy would mean I would lose the game. I am *really* glad I didn't know that when I was rolling saves...
TURN 3:
Crone come in and VSs one talon
Flrant 1 comes in 6" from WK, in range of a talon
Flyrant 2 comes in between Wk (on left) and 2 talons (on right)
Harpy forgets to move...whatever
Crone manages 2 VS, and both Pen. Talon *can't jink* so goes down.
Psy phase (I remembered, aren't you proud?)
Psy scream from flyrant, cause 3 wounds, he saves 1
Crone Fires missile at other talon, gets a glance
Flyrant blows the talon out of the air
Flyrant 12 shots at WK, gets 3-4 wounds. WK fails *3* saves. Down to 1 wound.
He rolls for his maelstrom missions, and I remember I didn't do anything with harpy... he doesn't volunteer to let me move him; well, he is getting hammered, so thats okay.
WK assaults and way kills harpy. Harpy tries valiantly to remove last wound on WK, but...whatever.
(In case you are wondering, the other WK is sitting on an objective near his side of the board.)
TURN 4
Both flyrants bank hard to get LoS to the WK that is now hiding behind the same terrain piece that didn't quite protect my harpy.
24 shots... at least 1 wound. Dead WK
His WK stays put, maybe scores a maelstrom, who knows.
Turn 5/6
It wasn't until turn 5 that I actually remember to roll for maelstrom goals... yeah... its like that.
Turn 5 I swoop to positions between the objectives, turn 6 and glide and land near 3 objectives in 3 table quarters. He *may* be able to reach me, but it wouldn't change anything. (He said he was really hoping I would forget to Glide last turn. )
I got Primary, Secondary, Win, for 11pts.
Game 3:
Primary: Maelstrom
Secondary: Objective
Tertiary: Table quarters
Bad guy: Demons
Blood thrister
20 khorne dogs, with herald with Rage banner and Grimoire.
Pregame: Before the game, someone said "He can't do anything to you" and my reply was "nope, nothing except win the game" Sure he couldn't effect my FMCs, but with Maelstrom as primary, it was going to be really hard to win this. My plan/hope was to kill Blood thirster and then try to spread out and let him kill my units as I gathered maelstrom points. Yeah... that sounds like a great plan...
Map had lots of ruins. Spaced pretty evenly, 2 in each deployment zone, 3 in no mans land
I wanted his Blood thirster to move forward so I could VS it, so I let him go first.
Turn 1
Dogs move 15" or so with Run move.
BT stays put to get maelstrom point
FMCs all move up 12"ish.
Crone flames dogs, gets a wound or two. (Khorne dogs are T4 with 2W, normally a 5++ save, but grimoire can make it a 3++, or a 6++ with a bad roll)
Harpy STC dogs, gets a wound or two
flyrants 24 shots on BT, causes 2 wounds
TURN 2
Dogs fail grimoire, and have nowhere to go, so all head into ruin in center of board for cover save.
BT against stays put to grab same maelstrom goal/objective
Crone flys over dogs and flames them (forgot to VS them...)
Harpy drops spore mine bomb and STC cannons them. Between Harpy and Crone, kill about 3ish and maybe some wounds on others.
Flyrants soft bank towards dogs, but keeping BT in range. 24 shots.. manage to kill BT. But.... I didn't have 'kill unit' as one of my maelstrom goals that turn.
TURN 3
Dogs again fail grimoire (so 6++ save), but head to the ruin on the right side of my deployment zone, for the objective there.
Harpy lands near far objective to get maelstrom point
Crone banks hard to come back to dogs, flyrants get into range of dogs
Harpy takes a shot, but can only see a couple of dogs, STC gets a 'hit', so I reroll it.. and get a scatter *towards* the rest of the dogs. Goes from 2-3 under marker to 7-8. (yeah, I am a badass)
Crone flames, flyrants pour 24 shots.
I kill a Butt Ton of dogs. He has 4-5 left, and the herald.
We are running out of time.
TURN 4
Herald has to break away from dogs to try and make it to objective. He needs a 6" Run...he gets a 4 YAY!... what? Fleet??!!?? he rolls a frickin 6!! (He needed more than 20.8", and he got 21" Crayzee)
Harpy grabs same objective again. (of the 7 points scored in game, 4 came from the same objective)
Flyrant lands and kills herald
Crone glides and flames remaining dogs
Flyrant lands and kills some dogs and grabs objective.
Time runs out, game is over, he wins with 4-3 maelstrom points.
[Wait, let me get this straight... I won on tertiary, I won on secondary, I was 3-4 models away from tabling him, I only lost 3 wounds (total) the entire game.. and he won based on a last turn 6" Run... KHHAAAAANNNNNNN!!]
Yeah, another turn and I would have easily taken him out, but such is how the game plays.
I got secondary and Tertiary for 4pts.
They asked each player 'who was your favorite opponent', and I managed to win that. Which acted as the tie-breaker... so I took 2nd in the tourney. The guy that won was quite a bit ahead of us. (we had 24pts, I think he had 30?)
Winning army was 3 annihilation barges, Ghost ark, some warriors and other Cron stuff (lord, cryptek, stuff...)
It was a lot of fun.
