Carnifex-based conversions: are they viable anymore?

Hi all, I used to post on here quite a bit back in 2011 and 2012, but then I kind of got out of the habit of finishing my army because of school. Anyway, I've been starting up again with painting my models, and I'm running into a dilemma. I'm wondering if anyone else has ever dealt with this.

I made two Tervigon conversions out of Carnifexes back when Tervigons first debuted. The actual model they released turned out to be substantially larger than the ones I converted.

Has anyone had trouble using Tervigon models that they built from Carnifex kits for size purposes? I could imagine an opponent would prefer you use the larger official model because it's harder for it to hide or get cover saves. It's just frustrating because now these models that I worked so hard on are just sitting around, potentially useless.

Also, I'm sitting on a Tervigon/Tfex kit. I'm leaning towards building the Tfex but my decision ultimately depends on the feedback I receive here. Should I build the Tervigon (the actual model seems pretty cool and people only tend to run one anyway), or the Tfex (I already have a Trygon-based conversion that works pretty well for this size-wise)?

Please help me out, this is a real dilemma. I'm so looking forward to assembling either a Tervigon or Tyrannofex. By the way, anyone had luck magnetizing the kit?

I remember being really surprised when the Tervigon model wound up being as large as it was. The cynical part of me wonders if GW did that on purpose, so people wouldn't be able use their Carnifex conversions, which were really popular, and have to shell out for new models.

But as for your dilemma, I'd think if you just moved the conversions onto the appropriate size base, there's no reason someone should make a fuss during casual play. Then you can build the model you want out of the kit you bought, and should anyone complain about the size, you could swap out for the T-Fex.

Thanks nikh, although I think I will go ahead and magnetize the kit, because both models look really cool and it would be so easy to magnetize that I can't justify not doing so.

And yes, I agree that GW was deliberately doing this to screw us over. I can't imagine any other reason for them to take a whole year (give or take) to produce models for new MCs that were introduced in the codex.

I put my conversions on the big oval bases and made their back chimneys a bit taller and I have yet to have a problem

Yeah the biggest concern imo is base size. I don't think players in my area would call you on it, but it is probably best to bulk up any fex conversions you intend on using for tyranno/tervi's just to be on the safe side.

The fex is still useful for conversions, just not a single fex for the oval based kits imo. I've seen 4 fex's(on this forum a looooooooooooooong time ago) turned into a hierophant. I've seen 2 turned into a trygon. Etc etc.

Now GW can't move those fex boxes to save their lives since 4th ed they practically gave them away in the battleforce.

My conversions were also considerably smaller so I assembled 3 new tervigons to replace my converts. The old (please do not swear) are still in the Rubbermaid tub that I like to call the digestion pool waiting to be converted to something else. On a separate note, the tervigon tfex kit is my second favorite after hive tyrant for price point, conversion possibilities and extra bits.

In a game where it has become legal to field greater demons of Slaneesh next to an invisible Eldar/Dark Eldar Beastpack, backed up by a Tau Fire Support Cadre, who cares about a model being half an inch smaller? These days, modelling for advantage seems like one of the lesser evils in the game. In your particular case it isn't even that, you are just using the models you aleady paid for.

In a tournament setting you're expected to have your models on the correct size bases I'd imagine.

Thanks guys. I don't think I'll ever have to worry about tournament play--I am pretty bad at the game and I don't think I'd ever go to a tournament (but hey, who knows!).
