Has anyone used the Barbed Hierodule?

Hey Hive!

So I'm looking at going to a tourney this September that is running BAO rules, so I can actually bring a LOW legally for the first time.

My question to all of you is; has anyone used a Barbed Hierodule, if so, how did it work out? I'm really hesitant to invest so much points on one model. Sure the Bio-Cannons look sexy, but is it worth the 500+ points?

I plan on running a Skyblight + Malanthrope at the very least. Debating bringing my Diamacheron but if I do I don't have enough points for a Hierodule.

I've never run a LoW in 40k. There's another hardcore 'Nid player in my city, and he always brings a GC of some sort since they've been allowed (last 6 months or so?). He's had a lot of luck with it, especially against other LoWs. I'd use it as a stationary fire base in the best cover you can get. T8, 3+, cover save plus FNP is no joke. I'd give him a Venom rather than a venom, as you can LoS the venom behind him easily. If you're bringing a Mal, I'd put it with your advance force to take advantage of it's durability and potential PE buff.

If you're running Skyblight+Barbed Hierodule, I would see you getting in the top 50% even if you phone in your games.

If your running skyblight, I think I would be taking a harridan. I have never used a lord of war, so I could be complexly out of place here, but I think that would have a better place in your list. It could take attention away from your other FMCS.

Speaking as someone who has run Skyblight and Harridan (only once mind you) I absolutely trashed a DE venomspam boat list in Maelstrom.

If they're running BAO rules, then Barbed Hierodule is the only Tyranid LOW allowed (assuming they use the same LOW restrictions).

Yeah, as much as I'd love a Harridan skyboat formation, I'm pretty sure the Hierodule is the only LOW I can take. Mind you I've asked for clarification.

I'll let you know as soon as I got my army list up, what you guys think? I'm pretty nervous as this will be my first "hardcore" tourney.... *gulp*

Remember, LoW is part of a CAD. So fitting one in with skyblight starts becoming a problem. (especially harridan)


As for the Heirodule.... Did you play in 5E? The Heirodule now is like the Tfex/rupture cannon was then. Way too expensive, not nearly enough offense....yet still taken because we has so little anti-vehicle options.

The Heiro is *way* too expensive at 500+ pts. (compare with wraithknight) But... we have no other option for high S shooting at range; so some folks like it anyway. Especially if worried about other LoWs. Personally, I would rather spend the points on other units.

Point for point the heirodule is superior to WK for long ranged S10, not counting explodes results (I.e. Shooting super heavies) and in combat isn't far off.

Stomp makes a massive difference compared to the old Tfex and even against other modern MCs. Being able to completely remove models from play when you aren't even in combat with them is nasty.

I'd say it's definitely viable, how competitive it is compared to more S6 spam though will depend on your meta.

Pretty sure he was not running skyblight. Think only JY2 was running skyblight. (of the top 4-5)

Here is the question... what are you planning on doing with the Heiro? What are the 'favorite' targets?

How many of those targets can be handled better by another unit?

What enemy unit really needs a Heiro as a counter?
