Best of the best 10 year celebration; Army List Competition

While The Hive Mind is all about painting competitions, I'm all about playing the game. To this end I'm making the 10 year anniversary army list building competition.

Here's how it's going to go down, I'm going to get lists from four of our moderators and you as a community are going to nominate four members to submit lists. Then, on September 3 we're going to pit the moderator lists versus the members lists ono-on-one, deathmatch style. Each week you will be able to vote on which list is better, the winner moves on to the next week and the loser goes home.

The rules are simple:

1) Tyranids must be the primary detachment
2) Since NOVA is happening at the end of the month we will use the NOVA rules for army submissions.
3) No formations. This isn't a comment on formations, I just don't want people to choose between 6 skyblight lists.
4) No names or posting lists prior to the competition. Voting is for the list, not the creator.
5) All lists will be submitted to me.
6) In addition to your list you may submit a short explanation on why you chose your units, how you would expand the army, etc...

What's in it for you? Bragging rights. That and if a member wins I might be convinced to part with some of my Giger hormagaunts.

Legal Army Lists / Army Specifics / Points Sizes (1850)
The NOVA Open operates at 1850 Points.

3.2.1 Legal Army Construction
The 7 th Edition of Warhammer 40,000 introduced a large amount of variance in what constitutes a legal
army list. To that effect, and for 2014, with consideration given to how new the game is, and in concert
with other major tournaments such as the Bay Area / Las Vegas Open, the following constitutes legal
army construction at the NOVA Open for the Warhammer 40,000 GT and Invitational events:
1. You may not select more than 2 total Detachments, and must contain a Primary detachment
2. You may not select more than 1 Combined Arms Detachment
3. If you do select a Combined Arms Detachment, is must be your Primary detachment
4. All Formations, Codices, and Dataslates published by 8/1/2014 are considered legal
5. Forgeworld rules will not be legal for 2014, though are likely in some capacity for 2015
6. You may select 0-1 Fortifications from the following:
a. Aegis Defense Line
b. Imperial Bastion
c. Skyshield Landing Platform
d. Firestorm Redoubt
e. Vengeance Weapons Battery
7. Conjured units are not considered part of an explicit Detachment. As a result, benefits from your Warlord such as Conqueror of Cities and benefits granted by being a part of a given detachment do not apply to Conjured Units. Furthermore, as a RAW clarification, Conjured Models interact with other models as per the Allies Matrix, rega
rdless of the Faction that summoned them.
8. You may not use Lords of War. Expect this to be reassessed for 2015 (as with Forgeworld)
9. Both the new Space Wolf Codex and previous Space Wolf Codex will be legal for the 2014
NOVA Open 40K GT and Invitational. You must indicate which you are using on your army list.
You may not mix and match units from both within the same army.
10. Come the Apocalypse allies are legal.
11. Allied Detachments MAY BE SELECTED from the same Faction as the Primary Detachment.

No, no, no. It's a logistical impossibility to actually sit down and play these games (at least without using computer programs shut down by GW). This is strictly a competition to see who can build a better army list.

Basically every week in September starting on the hive's birthday I'm going to start polls with two of the submitted army lists. You will then vote on whichever army list you like better.

So if you want in on this don't let your location stop you. This is supposed to be fun for everybody.

Here's a question Yori, are we designing for a TAC list (i.e. what we would bring to NOVA) or are we designing to be faced against a single tyranid list each week (i.e. can your list beat the other tyranid list)?

Furthermore, I would ask if you want to limit the allied detachment in anyway (to make it a majority of tyranid), i.e. no more than 25% from Allies and your primary CAD must be Tyranids etc.

What you build is up to you. We're using the NOVA requirements because it narrows down the huge amount of crazy things you can put in an army with 7th edition, not necessarily because you want a take all commers list. If you want to make a list that is geared to take down Chaos Deamons then by all means, go ahead.

The check is that each member who votes does so by his own criteria on what the "best" army entails. Some may feel the best army is one that can win in a fight between the two lists. Others may think the best army is the one that is most likely to win a major tournament (such as the NOVA open this weekend). There are also people who could determine that the best list is the one that they would have the most fun playing. Or they could be like myself and vote for the list with the most genestealers.

You should also remember that this is a tyranid army list competition. While there is nothing saying you can't bring in an allied detachment it may be frowned upon with more necrons than tyranids a in your army.
