To all you airbrushers....part deaux

Hello again hive

so I have ordered my airbrush, should get here Tuesday  

no no though, I need to find a respirator. Decide a 3M one would be best but have no idea what filters I need...I'm guessing a organic one and partical one...

could anyone please advise? What face masks and filters do you use?

That's the mask you put over your fence to keep the paint splatter off it, of course.


I wasn't aware air brushes created enough spray dust to really worry about getting it -everywhere- much less enough for you to breathe it in. I've always seen them as a fairly clean way to paint... well.. for a spray at least.

In theory yes you should use a mask, in practise I don't unless I'm spraying oils or solvent based paints. As far as Im aware a normal dust mask should be sufficient for acrylics.

Most air brush acrylic paints I've used doesn't really warrant a face mask and there isn't all that much odor when you use them
I think you will need to use one if you are working with oils or enamels which does have a strong odor.
I typically put it on when I'm using spray cans though

I was being facetious in my previous post, of course. A respirator is ESSENTIAL when airbrushing. The thought that it's clean (cleaner than aerosols) or that acrylics don't have an odor like enamels, so it's OK to go without is actually very dangerous.

Remember, the airbrush is basically vaporizing the paint, so a dust mask made to catch particulate matter won't be enough. If you are airbrushing without a mask, acrylic paint is literally coating your lungs on a microscopic level. This is not good.

Yeah this was my understanding as well and took your comment as it was meant!

So I'm reading you need an organic and a vapour filter to cover all basses. Any suggestions?

A pop over to your local hardward or big box store should square you away. just head to the paint department and grab any mask rated for vapor.
