Table almost finished but needs plants. Help (pic heavy)

So for the last year or so iv been slowly building a 40k table. I wanted to make city that has been totally devastated by tyranid invasion that was repeled a long time ago but after many years some vegetation is starting to grow back.

Heres what I have so far.



A wall that has been breached.


A bridge with fortifications.


A temple of some sorts.






A water pumping station and a ruined building.


I have finished all the buildings but I want to buy small very bright green soft plastic plants, vines and jungle themed vegetation. to scatter all over the ruins.

Does anyone know of anything that would suit? I have been to some local model train shop but the trees and stuff they had looked out of place on that table.

It seems somewhat modular, so you can mix up where the terrain goes. good stuff.

Try going to a local pet shop (one that specializes in fish or reptile would be best) they usually have an abundance of plastic plants that can be cut up and made look to scale for 40k. Fish stores sometimes even have blue or purple plants for some alien vegetation if that's what your looking for

most model train vegetation tends to not be jungle. also post nid invasion they tend to strip everything on the planet down to barren rock. dirt even.

On topic, I used Woodland scenics Foliage on a lot of my terrain to make buildings look overgrown. It looks decent for just plants growing up over buildings or hanging down off things. It comes in sheets you stretch and cut it however, place where you want, then soak it pretty good with a spray glue. It adheres to plastic buildings really well. I like to dust it with a lighter shade of flock to highlight it. Looks like a thick leafy climbing/hanging plant. Can paint when it dries or use flocks for highlighting.  Easy to do lots of coverage and fast once you have a feel for the material and dont need to adjust as much after soaking it.

I've done that to buildings then scattered a lot of painted fish tank plants with good results for jungle looking growth and ferns. Jungle trees are harder, they need to be larger and sprawlier? imo. The same company has a canopy tree kit, but I've never used it because I wasn't sure what it was what I was looking for.

Miniaturetree.com has a few trees that I liked it's just a little too pricey for me per tree for the volume I'm looking for. Making your own wire skeleton trees is probably the way to go, just a lot of work.

Marineland and Aqueon brands have some good artificial fish tank plants for cutting up to make good jungle ferns and ground plants in 40k scale. For my preferences anyways.

Hope this helps or at least stumbles you across something that does. Woodland scenics has a bunch of video tutorials, while they aren't usually jungle themed layouts, I've had a few ideas spark while watching them building in their tutorials. If you end up using the foliage, I'd recommend some small practice stuff. Just to get a feel for how placing it then soaking with glue causes it to lay over and hang from things.

Thanks for the advice guys I will be looking up those sites when I get home today. Didn't think about fish shop or pet shop I might go past this afternoon.

And ye the terrain is somewhat modular so It doesn't get boring.

Sometimes it can get a bit annoying playing on it with big monstrous creatures and tanks trying to squeeze through. Spiky bits keep getting stuck everywhere.

But then stuff like infiltrating 20 genesteelers under the bridge out of line of sight and then both of us forgetting they are there till 3 turns into the game when the majority of his army is crossing it makes up for it.

Second the reptile plants, look at exoterra stuff as it's pretty good (albeit fairly expensive) and you should be able to order it online.

The leaf heads are removeable and just slip onto the plastic stem, nothing stopping you stripping the whole lot off and using it as low lying scrub or have it climbing buildings. Have a look through the range of them as a couple of different types together makes a pretty good effect.

BTW I keep geckos and snakes so have played around with these things quite a lot

Firstly, FANTASTIC BOARD! It's a little monochromatic in my opinion, but there's no denying that the level of craft and detail is exceptional!

Secondly, do consider the plastic plants that others have recommended. you can find them at most pet or fish shops. Probably get them even cheaper online. If you do use these, consider giving them all an agrax wash before placing them on the board, or possibly giving them a dusting of a brown spraypaint, as the pure, super green plants will look very out of place against the dark board.

Lastly, use photo reference to see where the plants should go. google image search of ruined building should net you some great inspiration that will have you placing the sparse vegetation in realistic places, along building cracks and things like that.

Hmmmmm.... I assume the monochromatic aspect is to represent how it was a burned-out abandoned for centuries husk of a planet.

Perhaps if there were some random colorful items that made it through the years... like when a store sign falls, and the wall behind it is clean and colorful, or a car protected under a bridge has one colorful side, or.... (hey, you guys are better at this than I am.

I think it would help break up the 'mono' aspect, and the occasional color would actually highlight the blight and destruction that is 90% of the landscape.

Ye the reason the entire table is just one colour and dry brushed grey is to capture the whole "nothing left alive" look after a virus bomb or some kind of fire cleansing that burned everything. Also the black table really makes the colour scheme of my nids pop out more. I would like to do some details like I mentioned coredump but I got so many models to paint to make my list competitive with 7th ed.

But thanks for the feedback guys keep it up. I have ordered some ferns from one of the sites mentioned to do some trials, but I'm busy working on my new venom thrope atm.

Also glueing fine green flock into corners/crevices will work quite nicely for moss/lichen, look for some reindeer moss for low scrub, if you can't find a suitable colour then overbrushing will work nicely.
