So, I finally found the carry 'system' I have been looking for.
I wanted a solution with stackable boxes of various height that I would swap in or out as needed. I also like the idea of the models being magnetized.
Tada:

This is actually sold as a storage system, but I think it could work as a carrying case also.
The boxes come in various heights, and for only $3.50 you can get any box lined with either a magnetic sheet, or a steel vinyl sheet.
You can then either glue fender washers onto your minis, or get magnetic bases (which they also sell, and pretty darn cheap)
They also sell inserts that have base-sized cut outs. These will make the models much less likely to slide around, but mean you can fit fewer models.
Now, the only issue is keeping them together and easy to carry. That will take a little effort. I envision two straps with a buckle or good velcro, something that will allow me to change the length depending on the number of boxes. Then on the top a 'handle' between the two straps so I can easily carry it. This should be easy to make.
If I found this site 8 months ago, I would have gotten them, no doubt. Since I already handmade my case... I will have to think about it.
If you want to use these for your carry case I have a few suggestions...
Contact them and make sure the magnetic sheeting and/or bases are using the 1.5mm thickness.
Make sure the 'steel vinyl' is of decent thickness. (really thin is fine for storage, but you want more attraction for a carry case) If not, either see if they can replace it, or you can just add it yourself later; or you can go with the magnetic bottom.
Decide if you want the inserts, they can even custom make some if that is better for you.
For your metal models, or things like vehicles or armocast Nids.... you could buy one of the boxes, and then get some pick and pluck foam to put inside.
Oh, for you guys in the states... I have no idea what their shipping costs are.
If any of you get this, or even talk to them, let me know how it goes. I have written them about some suggested changes, (like a carry strap) and will let you know if I hear anything back.
