Question about your local gw stores

Hey Hive wanted to ask a question about your local stores. My local gw has pretty much banned all forge world mini's from the store, doesn't allow any models to be used if they contain non gw bits and are refusing to let people use there boards if they do not own the rule book (even if it's people sharing one at the same table) is it just my store doing this or do any of your stores do this?

My local GW store is pretty laid back. Can't see them doing this.

If you want to participate in a tournament, or take part in a campaign, you'll have to have a rulebook at my LGS. In addition, it's generally frowned upon to used the discount stores to acquire new stuff, assuming that the store doesn't offer the product itself. IMO, this makes a ton of sense, in that one should "pay where they play" if that place doesn't charge board fees...etc.

Local GW store seems to be very dependent on the manager. As they have switched managers, the 'rules' have changed greatly. It got so strict for awhile that I stopped going. New manager is pretty cool.

The two local stores near me are relatively relaxed, but they both require GW-only minis to be used (or fully scratch-built, as that's part of the overall hobby). FW models ARE considered a part of GW, so they're allowed.

As to rules, there's nothing solid, as the managers want to encourage new players playing first, and get them in the hobby with a fun experience.

Ours say you need a current codex and rule book. And tbh I agree with that although not the GW release schedule. They are ok with normal models or converted slightly as long as the weapons are the correct ones. Unsure if it is in the 7th edition but you can always quote the rule of cool. I mean look in any WD and there'll be converted models. Why not phone up GW main HQ and say what's happening?

I got turned away when I was younger for not taking the 4th ed rulebook along with me. I was in a huff immediately after and didn't want to go back the following week, or the next, and that lead to me breaking the habit of playing every week and getting out of the hobby for about 7 years. Sounds childish but I had a lot going on at the time so when I broke the habit of playing I started forgetting to go each week until I wasn't even thinking about 40k any more

I remember they used to talk about properly basing and never fielding unpainted models and the manager sometimes used my stuff as an example of what models should look like, though I don't recall anybody being turned away for just painting their bases green

My local GW allows forgeworld, and encourages conversions. They do require you to use the most up to date rules, and use only GW/FW models (though they don't seem to have an issue with 3rd party bits added to their kits for conversions).

My local GW allows FW, but of course it has to be agreed upon by both players. They prefer no non GW minis, as understandably it is a GW store after all.

Rules wise, it is mostly all on the players who are gaming to decide with one another what to use.

In Argentina we don't actually have an oficial GW store (or at least it was like that the last time i checked) but about 4 years ago we had one. It encouraged younger players to use oficial GW kits (we didnt had any way to get FW kits) but with the 6 or 7 "grown up" players they only asked us to say that the lead (fake and cheaper) miniatures were old instead of fake (so that we dont mess with his clients). Which seemed to me perfectly fine

Times have changed. A lot of people have their books in digital formats now. My GW doesn't care although I highly doubt anyone would be allowed to play with non-GW products in there.

relatively laid back. forgeworld and converted minis that are at least 50% GW product are allowed. you can occasionally grab a codex off the wall if you forgot yours, or borrow dice from the store pool. I think he just wants people in there playing as much as possible, to increase the likelyhood of purchases.

^This; and I think this is a good way to go. No one likes to play with rules lawyers, even if we all have to play by those same rules. I would think it the same with stores, to encourage new players to get in and enjoy, and thus buy the models. I think there was a semi-recent post where someone said that was a GW statement as well, get the new players in.

With all the e-ditions, do stores check your iPhone before they let you play if they do require it? I usually bring my typed-out and simplified rules and stats tucked into my book. There, I have it, now for any quick reference here is a double sided paper with everything on it.

I have the DA mobi-ebook and printed it out and made a (please do not swear) little codex. i plan on doing the same with the orks codex as well as i dont have a tablet and hate flipping thru ebooks on my laptop to refer to things. my LGS hasn't had any issues with my little printed out version, and AFAIK GW says you can print out a copy as long as you "totally demolish it when you are done." I'm paraphrasing, but it's in the e-ditions somewhere.

the LGS is big about only letting people that buy models there play on the tables. They had issues with paying players not getting table spots a while back and the manager tracks purchases now and will not hesitate to boot you out if you are not paying him. that's where i spend my money for the game, so it doesn't bother me. however, if you are a new player the store has armies for you to try, and every dex for you to peruse. they are very laid back and easy to get along with...as long as you buy a model from them ever so often lol

My "new" LGS tracks every purchase as well, though for what means I do not know. As most the staff are creepy corporate nerds, I buy a few bits of paint there and everything else elsewhere. Sad, they are pretty much my only option now outside of basements.
