hi everyone. im new to warhammer 40k and i decide to choose tyranid as my army
i already bought hive tyrant/swarmlord model and a brood of genestealers
ill do my hive tyrant first, i cut all part first

i decide to magnetize all parts. (wings still on progress, if someone can help me how to do the wings)

Welcome to the Hive... keep posting pics, looks like a good start so far.

Always make sure you get your mold lines off of your models before you base coat. You can always prime back over them if you happen to miss one as long as you do it before spraying the base coat. Look under your lash whip arm and you can see the little line from where it was in the mold.

Yeah, making sure that mold lines are gone is pretty important. I have little advice on magnetizing other than doing is a smart move. Especially with the flyings things, as they get kind of unwieldy otherwise.

i want to ask a question, do you paint the body all first(base, wash, layer, etc) then the carapace or you base all the model, or base coat all the model, then wash, layer etc?

Interesting scheme. To shade the Sunset, you need to choose which wash. Each gives you a slightly different feel. Sepia will give you a duller, arguably most natural tone (Eavy Metal's Imperial Fists use this), while Cassandora yellow will give you a much brighter, shinier tone ( I use this for my Lizardmen). So have a play if you want darker, more gritty Nids, or brighter, more tropical Nids. Keep us posted!

I use darker colors on my Nids as I imagine them as Jungle Lurkers originally. So I use a Black Primer, Dark Green base on the Carapace (and some skin/flesh persons), and then start highlighting with a lighter green (I just add white to my dark green).

I like your overall scheme as it is different - for some reason I loathe the Leviathan color scheme. Riverzora has some great advice. Decide if you want to go bright or dark and then try those colors out. Practice some drybrush techniques to get a good highlight scheme as well.

thanks for the advices, ill use sepia for my wash.
i have question about wash, do you need to add water before you wash? or just use it directly from the pot?

there are some parts(weapon mostly) not yet base coated, i haven't decide what color for that.
i think green for the weapons. what do you guys think?

You can apply washes right from the pot, no need to mix with water. I would probably try out a reddish brown for the weapons, but green might work as well .

Check out this post on Color Theory here ---->  Color Theory  It helped a LOT with my Tyranids.  I Highly suggest it to get your colors to mesh well. 

Remember: Sometimes LESS is MORE.  It always seems to be the little additions which make the model "pop" on the table.  This is especially true with Tyranids and the swarms.

jjuetten i already read that article you give. so i have 2 choices green, for color that not stand out but make different and blue, color that stand out for my scheme. and what is mesh?

i'm thinking for my hive fleet name, i think i'll name it hive fleet apex or hive fleet krypton if the weapon is green(referring to kryptonite)
what do you guys think?

"...get your colors to mesh well." In this instance "mesh" means that your colors will work well together. Instead of using something like Orange and Green or Orange and Purple.

I like the idea of green as it is my favorite color (and goes with your Krypton name which is cool). But a nice hue of blue would be neat also. Maybe a dark blue with light blue highlights? One thing is to decide if you want to go "bright" or "dark" with your colors.

And do you want the weapons to really catch the eye or just add to the effect in a more subtle way?

small update for today, really busy today so can only wash the main body and the head. i use sepia for the wash
am i doing this to slow? i just don't want any mistake on my model so i double check and i dont have the best skill

jjuetten thanks for your help, you really help me. and i cant wait to see your hive fleet. i have an idea at this pic (swarm lord) the sword is black and highlighted with dark red (the edge), how about i paint them green and highlight/dry brush with blue?
the green using moot green and light blue like lothern blue/ teclish blue/ skink blue, and then using green glaze to make it like glowing. i see from this: glow effect i think it will be cool. what do you think?

That Sepia wash is really making them look cool! I don't use washes, so technically you're light years ahead of me. hahaha

Thanks for the compliment. I'm still pretty amateur myself though I've learned a few things in painting some of my hive fleet. Glad I can pass that knowledge on.

For the swarmlord swords: I like your idea. It ties in two complimentary colors and should work well. Try it out on paper or something first if you have ANY doubts. I actually painted my Swarmlord swords with blue lightning arcing through them. I thought it went well with the description as they are supposed to have some strange, blue alien crystal embedded in them.

I haven't yet worked with glow effects so if you go that route I wish you luck.

Overall I think youdon't have to worry. It all looks good so far and while you may not be painting quickly I think the end product will show the love and care you put into making it look great!
