So I got a copy of the Vanguard data slate. All hold off on my personal thoughts on it until I have had a chance to read through it carefully.
Anyway here's what we got:
Fluff: There is about 15 pages of fluff
Artwork/photos: There are a few new picture and artwork (nothing note worthy) but most of it shows up in the Codex as well.
Formations:
1. LICTOR FOREST BROOD:
1 Brood of 1-5 Lictors
Special rules: While in forest they have Shroud instead of stealth and can infiltrates up to 6 inches away from an enemy (In forests).
2. MANUFACTORUM GENESTEALERS
5 Genestealer broods
Special rules: They have hit and run and when infiltrating in building or ruins you can infiltrate up to 6 inches away from an enemy.
3. DEATHLEAPER’S ASSASSIN BROOD
5 Lictor broods and Deathleaper
Special rules: They have preferred enemy for characters and independent characters and all enemies have -1 to Ld when in 12 inches of any unit in the formation.
4. BROODLORD’S HUNTING PACK
3 Genestealer broods (with one and only one Broodlord)
Special rules: When entering from reserves they can enter in any unoccupied building or any ruins as long as they are at lease 6 inches away from an enemy. Also they have preferred enemy against a single chosen enemy unit.
5. GARGOYLE BIO-BOMBS
3 Gargoyle broods and 3 spore mine clusters
Special rules: If formation spore mine is 6 inches to a formation Gargoyle it can move 6 inches and runs and charges as normal (no half movment)
Mission Scenarios:
1. There is a Jungle ambush mission where Space Marines are trying to evacuate from a Jungle after being surrounded.
2. There is a underground industrial tunnels battle between IG and Tyranids.
Next Dataslate coming in February and has a Warrior on the cover.
UPDATE:
Ok so here is the overview of the fluff. Nothing overly new other than the story (which it interesting) other than it is said that Leviathan has been much harder to contain as it has adapted due to lessons learned from Behemoth and Kraken.
The plot is basically this. There is a world that is half jungle and half hive. It orbits a sun that leaves the surface too radiated to be livable by humans. However the jungles are made up of trees that have a sap that can be refined to make people have much higher tolerances to radiation. Also there are a number of huge ancient starships that are imbedded in the planets crust (it is not known how they got there). The Imperium used these to stop the planets rotation and the continually fire to insure that one side of the planet always faces the sun and the other is always dark. On the sun side the jungles grew more lush and on the dark side the radiation levels are much lower that is where people live. The whole planet revolves around harvesting the jungle sap and refining it on the dark side of the planet. The anti radiation serum is vital to the sector so it is guarded by a large contingent of Catachans and a small group of Aurora Spaces Marines (who use the planet as an observation post and do some recruiting there due to the planets harsh jungle/hive environs).
Anyway the Tyranids show up and there is jungle fighting and hive fighting. It looks like the Imperium is losing but it is stated that something is coming that could turn the tide.
They sent a final message before the Shadow of the Warp closed in early on. So we will see next installment what it is. I suspect the Blood Angles are going to show up because it was implied in part of the story that they had come to the planets aid generations ago. But it could be anything I suppose.
