Primer came out powdery. How do I fix this?!

So I primed my Trygon and a bunch of warriors last night and the paint came out super powdery. I even used the expensive GW stuff! Will simple green work on plastic, or is there something else I should use to strip the paint?

Simple green works decently. Primer typically comes out bad if you do it when there is too much humidity or when its cold. Try to do it in fair weather.

This. You may also want to avoid swelteringly hot days. How far did you hold the can from the model? Sometimes that has to do with the powderiness (although that's more of an army painted thing...) and were you spraying straight down on your model? Was the air full of dust?

I've never use Simple Green on a primed model, but it just might do the trick. If it doesn't strip the whole model, it should at least get the worst of the powder off... let us know how it goes! I'm interested in hearing what the result is. You're not alone in this problem.

GW white primer by any chance?

It's (please do not swear). -every- single can of it I've ever bought is extremely powdery. The black is fine though. First time it happened to me I thought I just got a bad can, second time was the last can I ever bought.

99 cent krylon white/black is best or if you want a different color, you can use the army painter spray cans. I've switched over to the army painter stuff for the bleached bone color.

Simple green may remove it, but I've never had simple green remove spray paint all that easily.

if it's white primer you used, try white Krylon primer, works about 5-6x better than GW's or any "model" primer out there. it's also very cheap only about $5 dollars a can and it has a special nozzle to change the spray direction so you can make the primer come out up and down, looks like this: |, and to make it spray side to side: --, also any setting in between for those in need of different angles.

Yea I had one can of white GW and it was all powdery as well, might be original reason I switched to black. I have had zero problems with the GW black. Would you recommend a krylon primer for black as well?

Hmm I don't recall ever having a problem with white primer, but I always prime my models inside my garage with a paint mask so it might be diffirent if you are doing it outside.

I've heard that gw primes isn't that great though and you can buy better and cheaper stuff. I guess I buy it to support my local gamestore.

I've gone through about 4 bottles of GW White primer and have never had a single issue with it.

What I found is that if you use too much primer it turns out very powdery. It's better to give the models 2 very thing coats from further away than one thicker one.
But then again, that's just what I found...

I tried using the Krylon White and I had issues with paint rubbing off afterwards. I've never had problems with the GW primer, only the finish.

The best way to remove paint is brake fluid. It doesn't work quite as well with the primer, but if that's all that's on it I'm sure it will work fine. Just get a bottle of brake fluid and soak the model in it for a day or so. Then rinse off the model, use a toothbrush to wipe away the paint that doesn't just fall off, then wash the model very well so the paint you put on afterwards will stick.

well, after spraying an entire 2700 pts ogre kingdom army.... i kinda feel your problem, white is the most annoying primer i've been working with -.- what you can do though is using methylated spirits and an old toothbrush.. to speed up the process, strips off the primer very fast

I've had this problem with GW whites, for me it just needs shaken up more. I use $1 walmart flat white spray now

I've had this problem, though not with a GW primer. I don't think so anyway... I think it was an old can of grey Army Painter primer if I recall correctly- may have been a basic walmart availible grey primer that wasn't krylon or rustoleum. I never had any problems with it before, but this one time it decided to make everything all "fuzzy". Luckily in my weird instance they were all metal, so a bottle of nail polish remover did the trick. I suspect the age of the can, amount left in the can and humidity were to blame.

Nowadays I've fallen in love with the white P3 spray primer.

It was GW white primer. I tried again on a Biovore, but this time I held the can a little closer and it came out perfect, so I'm guessing I just had the can held too far away.

Whatever it was, I still need to remove the primer from the other models. I'm gonna try and get to the store to pick up some simple green tomorrow. I'll let you guys know how it works out for me.
