Coredump, I agree that changes make the game new and add a fresh look. And yes I think GW went way too far with nids. When a dex is redone it is nice to get some new models to add to the army but nids was almost a replacement. We went from 2 MC to 10. The dex had almost a 3 times increase in the number of units, some of which served no real purpose except to supplant another model which was a (please do not swear) move.
We knew we were getting the trygon/mawloc beforehand adding 2 MCs. The venomthrope, pyrovore, tyranid prime, parasite, deathleaper back in, spore pod alone would add a lot (with decent rules) to the army. Did we really need so many more? What comes in the next dex rewrite? Adding just the above could add a lot of new options and flavour to the army, but GW went WAY overboard.
The T-fex was unnecessary as the carnifex could have fulfilled this role without ticking off nid players (and no I only had 2 fexes at that time). Hive guard are not needed since the warrior could easily have fulfilled the role along with other roles - if the weapon adjustments and changes to the warrior were decent. The tervigon was a replacement for 'without number' but badly handled, IMO. Ymgarls are nice and I use them often but would it have been better army-wise/design philosophy-wise to have lictors (and deathleaper) remain the nid unit that could assault the turn it arrived - would fit the lictor fluff.
So many units and it would seem too many for GW too handle since so many of their rules are poorly written, point cost off, etc. I would rather they had spent the time making sure a smaller number of the new units added and older now-modified units meshed together well with decent rules.
