Two month painting competition - July/August « Thread Started on Jul 3, 2012, 7:10pm »
Are your arms tired from reading the new 6th Rulebook? Need to relax your muscles by doing some painting? Ready to grow your Nid force now that 6th has made them the UberArmy we always secretly knew they were? Then this is the competition for you!
We use a points system for models based on size. The idea is to do a minimum of 20 competition points in two months, scored as follows.
Infantry, 25mm base= 1 point Cavalry, bikes, or 40mm base = 2 points Monstrous creature, Dreadnought, or terrain larger than 40mm base = 5 points Vehicle or Trygon/Mawloc/Tervigon = 10 points Superheavy, gargantuan = 20 points
And here's the unique bit - we have a badge system, so that if you paint over 400 points (Codex type points) you can have an "Swarmlord" Achievement badge in your signature. So that even if you don't win the competition, you get recognition for going that extra mile. Yes, I still intend to make these.
Here are the rules:
1. You must post in this thread the list you are painting (it doesn't need to be legal unit sizes) AND a picture of the unpainted models (they may be primed though). You can do this any time from now until the end of the competition.
2. You must paint at least 20 competition points of models according to the list above, completely including bases (unless they are transparent flying bases).
3. You must post pictures of the finished models to this thread before the end of 31st August 2012. Ideally no more than 5 pictures in total, but you must clearly state that they're the final ones for entry in your post.
You can post updates as you go along, for feedback and to encourage others.
Once all the entries are posted, I'll generate a poll so that the entries can be voted on. We are looking for quality of painting. This is a competition. A signature badge will be awarded to the winner and the second place runner up. A badge will also be awarded to anyone who paints over 400 Codex points, whether they win or not. These badges are somewhat mythical, but they are coming soon.

I have quite a bit of stuff to get through in the next few months.
In the picture, primed and ready to go there is: 2x Finecast Tyrant Guard 2x Metal Zoanthropes 1x old school Metal Lictor 1x Metal Broadlord 7x Genestealers 1x My very own Mycetic Spore creation (I have the bits to make another one if I like the result 7x Space Marines (Prey....Yum!)
I also bought an unsealed AOBR box for half price at my local games store, and will be painting the Space Marines for my son to use. (He likes to play, but not paint.) I'll get to the Orks sometime when I feel like painting something different.
I also have a Metal Hive Tyrant that I got very cheaply soaking in Dettol, that I think I might use the parts left over from my Flyrant to convert to the Swamlord.
Oh and there are 5 Space Marine Scouts soaking in the Dettol too.
I'm brand new to 40K, and will be picking up a copy of 6th Ed this week to start reading and learning. No doubt my plastic crack addiction won't end there, and I will buy some more stuff soon enough.....

Okay. Here's a group shot, mostly undercoated, tester model somewhat more done, some color on bases - Hope that's ok.
And here's a couple of closeups on the tester I did. I'd really appreciate some feedback as this is my first time trying to do black power armor and I gotta say, it's tricky. I'm not sure if I'm happy with it, or the scheme in general, so any tips/pointers/ideas most welcome.

@guidebot. The mini looks good but it feels like its missing something. I can tell you do more than 1 color for the base terrain. Experiment. I changed from doing what ever the grit was to drybrushing it 2 different greys which allowed the green armor to pop more, to trying out different desert sand/dirt gravel colors and they made the mini pop when I added flock. Since your mini is going black templars-ish colors and you already did brown, go dirt road. Drybrush it so the main brown is still there and it will have a dusted look effect on the rock and the SM's feet. Adds a realism factor. Also the miniature never truly looks amazing/finished until every thing is painted and the base is done. That includes doing flock you, if you are planning on doing flock.

Google black space marine armies and see how they are based and see if it makes them pop, and then experiment with the colors you have.
Thanks Helonion. Yea the basing is something that I really need to look at; I was going to finish those bases just kind of rocks and dirt but I'm thinking some extra detail is needed. I have some weathering poweder I was going to try, make the marines look dusty, especially on the feet/ shins like you say. And when it's done the mini will have purity seals and detail done. Then I guess I'll have a better idea of how well they look. I have some grass tufts (small clumps of takk, pronounced grass) in various colours that I'll experiment with too.
I have some guitar string and stuff that I'm using to convert some of my other Iron Hands (wait till you see the sternguard...) but this squad just has normal-ish cybernetics for now.
Oh, and flock you too! =)
Iron hands background Q: Someone told me it's basically heresy to do an IH army without a dreadnought? I thought they just had a big thing for machines and tech, and I can see how Dreads fit that, but I didn't think it was too big a deal?
