Hive Fleet Vespula (gargoyle unit complete)
« Thread Started on Mar 27, 2012, 8:24pm »

Well, I dont normally finish modelling diaries, but this time I am really going to try.

I bought a lot of models off Ebay about 3 weeks or so ago, and I wanted to do a test model and get some stuff painted before my fleet arrived.

I went out and bought a box of gargoyles.

Armed with a can of Daemonic Yellow I set to work! And got most of a test model done:

Here is the rest of the fleet undercoated:

So I then set to work on making some bases, more on how I make these at a later date, but rest assured, there will be pics!

I got the 10 bases done and decided that I should start on the actual fleet.

I have got 5 fully complete models and here is a couple of pics:

And finally the other half of the box of gargoyles as a WIP:

The main fleet arrived in front of this scouting party and are still on sprues. I really had to fight the urge to start assembling more models last night with my WIP's still on my desk.

I bit the bullet and did a little work on these suckers.

My plan is to have these last 5 finished tonight, then I can get onto the main force.

What's still on sprue? 2 Battleforce boxes, the new Hive Tyrant and a Trygon.

I hope you enjoy these :)

Do you base coat the models with anything before spraying on the army painter? I read elsewhere that otherwise the grey underneath would show. Is it the case?

I was concerned when I saw mention of yellow...but I really like it! Also digging the nard-style outlining, it works well with the bright color

yellow, more yellow, to much yellow... i dont know i like the idea but when i look at them if feels like the yellow is stealing some of the detail because its so bright, when you cluster them together vs a target i could see them turning into a yellow sheet rofl.
Might try sneaking some wash on the mebrains of wings so they aren't strait yellow. just my thought or maybe add some dots or something

Still want to see this in a army format, for all your enemy will know the sun is coming and it has claws!

I had some washes on the wings on the test model, but I really dont like the washed look, im more of a highlighted person.
The wings are glazed with a few layers of yellow on top of the undercoat.
I have a mate who had a lizardmen army painted in similar colours a few years back, but he sold them.
I have wanted to do my nids like this for a while, add into that Nard's work (Nard please note I had seen your stuff long before it was up on the GW website, I have been out of synapse range and have been subject to 'instinctive behavour lurk' on this forum for a few years) and you arrive at my current paint scheme.
I know that the gargoyle wings are normally another colour, but i figure with this army, they need to be the yellow.
More pics will come when the next 5 are finished. After that it will be Termagants!

Thanks for all the positive comments :)

I don't undercoat with anything before the demonic yellow. I have no problems with grey showing through. A couple of models are not 100% covered but it really saves me the base coat of yellow. I glaze over the undercoat and it covers the slight grey areas.

I got the other 5 up to a good spot tonight. Will hopefully get them up to just needing their eyes and tongues done tomorrow night.

There will be moar pics!!!

The black and yellow's pretty nice, but that blue looks kind of out of place.

If anything, I would recommend putting some red into the blue to make more of a purple color.

Well, I finished off this unit earlier this morning. I just have to get some pics up.

Ice pick I think I have seen your nids on gim(google image). Yours have blue carapace mine is chardon granite with a few greys.

Braddon, the Mrs has outlawed me doing another purple army :P

While the blue may look out of place, it provides a nice contrast to the bright yellow. A few of the bases have red on them.

I'll put up pics tomorrow night of the completed unit. I have also undercoated 12 Hormies. I'll throw those up.

I also promised a basing tutorial, expect that before Easter too :D
