Welcome to The Tyranid Hive

Hello and welcome to The Tyranid Hive.

Below are some rules and guidelines we have here and I encourage you to read them. For those of you who look at the size of this rules page and say TL;DR, I'll sum it up for you. We have two guiding principals here; we are a forum of ideas and we are a family friendly forum. So long as your posts start a discussion, add to a discussion, are respectful, and won't get a 10 year old in trouble during a parental inspection you'll be just fine.

And as always, if you have any problems or issues feel free to Private Message, (PM) myself or any other moderators here at The Tyranid Hive. Happy posting.

The Rules

Advertising:

Please DO NOT ADVERTISE ANY websites without contacting either The Hive Mind OR one of the Norn Queens. Please note that all Tyranid fan sites will be deleted! If you wish to promote your site in your signature, then that is fine.

If in a conversation a opportunity to link a article or page from your site arises that would benefit the conversation then you may link it through the topic.

However any new topics promoting your website are considered against the forum's rules and will incurre consequences.

Flame wars:

No flame wars are allowed here at The Tyranid Hive, by all means debate, but do not do so with out proper reason or if you don't have something to add to your comment.

A reminder that less common sense = more rules.

Post topics in the right place:

Be sure to post any topic in the right place. Too many times are painting topics posted in the modelling board and army list topics posted in the Tyranid General Board. Make sure your posting your topic in the right place.

On a twist of this, if a thread you're following appears to be missing do not just start a new thread for it. If the thread is gone it was probably moved to a more relevant board.

If unsure read the sub title to each board or ask one of our moderators through PM. Do not post the same thread on several boards "Just in case" (true story)

Use correct spelling

This site has many people where English is a second (or third) language. To make reading easier for them, please use correct spelling and grammar.

Further, by taking the little bit of time to not use abbreviations (gr8, any1, U, etc.) shows a bit of maturity, and respect for those reading. You want others to take the time to read and give a thoughtful response, you should be able to take the time to write out your post, without such shortcuts.

Thread Necromancy:

Right then, thread necromancy, don't do it. If it's more than a month old and dead it's because no one is posting in it and it's old. Leave it. Often, for old threads, the principals involved are no longer active. So you end up 'answering' a post that is now irrelevant. Thread necromancy will be judged based on the date of the last post and the relevancy of the post.

The only exceptions is if the thread is a blog and only then if it's the guy or gal that owns the blog that gets to post in it.

Reminder on Intellectual Property

GW and Newline own the rights to the games, and the information about the games. We need to respect that. We can discuss rules, and even post rules in short hand if needed for discussion. We cannot just give out rules.
Likewise, we cannot post stats, or point costs for wargear/biomorphs/models/etc. When posting a list, you can give the total for the brood, but don't break it down.

Trading/Commission:

This has always been a forum of ideas and not a place of business. As such we do not allow people to sell anything here. Besides, there are too many liability issues with selling things than we are comfortable dealing with. This ban on selling includes asking how much your army is worth and other things that could be considered as attempts to sell things.

If we find out that money has changed hands through this site you will be suspended. We're serious about this.

Now, if you want to link to something like an eBay auction that's fine. Heck, you'll probably get more money from eBay anyway.

Another thing that falls under this rule is internet stores. Under no circumstances are you to start or hijack a thread to hype a store. If a store name come up through normal conversation that's fine, but please do not try to drop store names. If you want to hype a store then put it in your signature.

One thing that you need to know about trading; we here at The Tyranid Hive are not responsible for anything traded here. Any deal you reach on a trade is between you and the person you're trading with. If anything goes wrong with your trade there is nothing we can do, so don't come crying to a moderator. And please do not start flaming someone for revenge because of a bad trade.

Commission Sites are allowed to be advertised, as these are helpful to some of our users and those who are posting the links to them. The preferred way to post links to your own commission site is in your signature, otherwise this falls in line with our advertising rules listed above.

The best way to put it is "Let the Buyer Beware."

If you have any questions please feel free to contact either one of the mods or myself.

Role Play and Gaming:

The Games Board has been created for all your mini games. The Role Playing Board is strictly for Role Playing, this is to stop the Role Players loosing their latest RP in the MASS amount of games that have sprung up. (Uzah! Scream the Role Playing Gaunts)
Please post all gaming topics there, (http://thetyranidhive.proboards28.com/index.cgi?board=minigames).

Casting of Games Workshop models

As it is against our agreement with Proboards to post material like this please refrain from posting topics about casting, also it is against Games Workshop's content agreement for us to show this so simply don't post topics with this in.

Banners

We here at The Tyranid Hive have a limit on banner sizes. Banners in signatures may not be bigger then 100x500 pixel and no more then 2 banners may be used.

Besides, if the banners in your signature are longer than your average post you come off looking like an idiot.

Guides

Image posting:

We have seen many new (and not so new) members asking how to do this, so I figured I would type up a tutorial. I go through some very fundamental things, just for the sake of those who aren't particularly skilled with computers.

The same techniques for posting pictures apply to signatures as well.

Simplified:

In order to post any picture, you will need to use BBCode. BBCode is similar to HTML, for those who are familiar with it. The reason we don't just use HTML is that if someone made a mistake in the code, it would mess up the layout of the forum. BBCode will not interfere with the forum and is therefore safer.

The BBCode "tags" for pictures look like this:

Code:
[img][/img]

Then, place the URL of the image you want to post in between the tags, for example, this code:

Code:
[img]http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/carnogaunt/thNewBugPhotos004.jpg[/img]

...would produce this image:

In-Depth:

1.First, you will need to upload your images to an image hosting site. Most people here use Photobucket. Any questions about it you might have are explained on the site.

2. To post a message (rather than using the quick reply box), click the icon in the bottom right corner of a topic:

This will bring you to the Post Message interface:

3. Now click the Insert Image icon:

The "img" tags will appear in the Message box:

4. Now, copy the URL. The URL will be displayed beneath the picture on your image hosting site:

Paste the URL between the two tags like this:

Now click the "Post Message" button and your picture will display:

Terminology and Abbreviations

Newer players often are hit with many different abbreviations and new terminology when coming to this site, or other ones similar to this. In any kind of game, there is going to be a lot of terminology that gets thrown around by the veterans and adepts of the game.... but this can intimidate or confuse newbies. There are often questions asked and, outside the tactics section on the website, there is no where that defines these terms and posts them for all players to use.

The idea of this part of the thread is to list a whole host of these in order to help newbies acclimatise to this game and/or army. I will try to do this in an appropriate manner to make this a simple reference guide. Note that this is not a tactic guide, rather a reference point to understand the terminology used here on the Hive.

Again when possible please list full names, however in ongoing topics we can understand this maybe a bit laborious. So please use the below so we can all have a idea as what the abbreviations mean.

Let's start with common abbreviations and acronyms before getting more technical...

Acronyms and other Army contractions

AG - Adrenal Glands (usually also has a prefix or suffix to show what type of Adrenal Glands are being used)
AoBR - Assault on Black Reach. The starter set for this edition of 40K.
ATSKNF - The Space Marine special rule "And They Shall Know No Fear"
BRB - Basic Rule Book... i.e. the Rulebook for 6th Ed. I suppose it could also count as Base Rule Book too...
BS/LW - Bonesword/Lash Whip (Weapon Symbiote for Tyrants)
CC - Close Combat
Crons/'crons - Necrons
CSM - Chaos Space Marines
DE - Dark Eldar
FH - Flesh Hooks
FNP - "Feel No Pain" Universal Special Rule
FOC - Force Organisation Chart
FT - Feeder Tendrils
GEq - Otherwise known as Guard Equivalent. Comprises of a statline of mainly 3s and an armour save of 5+. Often cheap and so able to be taken en masse. Often used to compare things to Dark Eldar, Eldar, Imperial Guard and Tyranid Gaunts. Sometimes used to describe Tau Fire Warriors
GT - Grand Tournament
IB - Instinctive Behaviour
IG - Imperial Guard.
LR - Land Raider (refers to both Chaos and Space Marine variants). May also refer to the Imperial Guard's Le Man Russ battle tanks... check what context is being used.
LW - Lash Whip
Mathhammer - Using basic maths and statistics of dice rolls in order to calculate the likelihood of a certain event happening
MC - Monstrous Creature
FMC - Flying Monstrous Creature
Mech *Army Name* - Mechanised Army. This list will contain a lot of Transport vehicles and/or vehicles with solid weapons. For example, "Mech Eldar" indicates a Mechanised Eldar force, or "Mech Tau" a mechanised Tau force.
MEq - Marine Equivalents. Use the generic Space Marine statline of mostly 4s and a 3+ Armour save. More elite type of troop that are limited in number but quite good. Often used when comparing Chaos Marines, Necrons and Space Marines.
PF/K - Power Fist/Klaw
PW - Power Weapon
RAW/RAI - Rules as Written/Rules as Intended. Both refer to discussions about rules. Note that "Rules as Intended" is a contentious issue as it is impossible to know what the game designers were thinking when writing this up... Use with caution. "Rules as Worded" refers to the rules using the strict definition of the words written within the Rule book/codex/FAQ.
SM - Space Marines
Theoryhammer - *see "Mathhammer"*
TH/SS - Thunder Hammer/Storm Shield (equipment for Space Marine Terminators)
TL - Twin Linked
TS - Toxin Sacs
USR - Universal Special Rule, as noted in the Rulebook
WB - Warp Blast
WBB - The Necron special rule "We'll Be Back"
WF - Warp Field

Tyranid Specific Terminology
Note that for any given unit build there can be more biomorphs and such things added to these... these are only the bare basics.

Choir/Unholy Choir - A Psyker heavy tyranid list. Come from the 4th edition tyranid tyranid lists based around Psychic scream.
Devil/Dakka Fex - A Carnifex with Enhanced Senses and Two Twinlinked Devourers. "Devil" is preferred, despite the prevalence of "Dakka".
Devilgaunt - A gaunt equipped with Devourer and Toxin Sacs
Devil/Dakka Tyrant - Hive Tyrant with Enhanced Senses, Two Twin Linked Devourers and Toxin Sacs. As with Carnifex, "Devil" is the preferred terminology.
Flyrant - A Tyrant with Wings and, often, with Warp Field. Anywhere where you see "Tyrant", it is possible to exchange that term with "Flyrant". For example, you can have a Devil Flyrant (Enhanced Senses, Toxin Sacs, Two Twinlinked Devourers, Warp Field and Wings) or Scythed Flyrant (2x Scything Talons, Toxin Sacs, Warp Field, Wings).
God Fex - A Carnifex with most/all of the upgrades Often, but not always, will be a close combat monster with Crushing Claws
NidZilla - A Tyranid list that relies very heavily on having lots of Monstrous Creatures. Often will contain multiple Carnifex, Trygon, Tervigon, and tyrannofex, as well as at least one Tyrant in HQ. Depending on point value, you can have up to 14 Monstrous Creatures in a regular list, though it is not necessary to maximise these numbers.
Ninja Fex - Carnifex with 2x Scything Talons.
Screamer Killer - Carnifex with 2x Scything Talons, Bioplasma and Adrenal Glands
Scythed Tyrant - Tyrant with 2x Scything Talons and, usually, Toxin Sacs.
Skyrant - *see "Flyrant"*
Spine Gaunts - Gaunts with Spine Fists
Stealer Shock list - A list that runs lots of Genestealers
Swarm List - A list where there are a lot of Gaunts, Hormagaunts and Rippers.
Termagants - Gaunts with Fleshborers
Uber Fex - *see "God Fex"*

Non-Codex Creatures and Apocalypse
These things are often mentioned when there are games of 3000 or more points involved. These are almost exclusively used in Apocalypse sized games. This is not so much terminology for beginners as a general reference for everyone who do not play in Apocalypse sized matches but still like reading those threads anyway.

Armoured Hamster - Heirodule
Babyphant - Mini Heirophant
Hamster - Heirodule

Thanks for reading the rule, please be aware they will be updated from time to time so be sure to check the last update date.

And remember are golden rule; Have fun!

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England, now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.
