Eldar and Dark Elves?

so i was looking around the GW site, and i saw some resemblance between the WH40K Eldar and the WHFB Dark Elves...

Eldar and Dark Eldar are futuristic counterparts of Elves and High Elves. Everyone knows that.

There are also similarities between Dark Elf Witches and Dark Eldar Wyches...

... eh.. i use dark elf wyches are dark eldar wyches (nicer models) also wardancers, but yes... the similarities are there... for a reason... the two universes were supposed to be past and future versions... but they have been weening that out...

The relation between Fantasy and 40K have been debated for awhile. I think the most common idea is that Warhammer is actually Earth, but in a time shrouded by magic so far back that we couldn't possibly percieve it now, even with science. The similairities in the maps definately supports this. 40K itself is definately set in a future version of our own galaxy with Terra being the center of the Imperium.

Another theory is that the Warhammer Fantasy world is actually a world located on the edge of the Eye of Terror, but somewhere in warp space that the 40K universe has never been able to reach it.

There's also the idea that the Fantasy world is in an alternate reality/dimension and is our own Earth's counterpart. Most interesting about this theory is that, from some discussion around here, that the Emperor actually sent ships through the warp and anihillated the Fantasy world in some distant future of the planet in an attempt to cut off the Chaos gods, which obviously failed and is why Chaos is now so eager to consume the 40K universe. That's mostly just speculation, but an interesting idea nonetheless.

well there is eldar and dark eldar, and in fantasy there are high elves, dark elves, and wood elves.

I guess all elves just recognize that there is a god of war, khaine. The eldar have learned how to summon khaine onto a battlefield into an avatar form. In the fantasy world, the dark elves adorn khaine, the witches are his devout servants and known as the "brides of khaine". They are full of love and bloodlust and go into a frenzy warpath state in battle, much like the avatar.

So ya, the similarity is there because its the same god.

--edit-- and i dont see why its so hard to believe how they could worship the same god. In the fantasy world the only reason there are dark elves was because there was a debate over who the next phoenix king should be, some elves seceded, and civil war broke out. I dont know what happened in 40k but i presume the dark eldar were just eldar that broke apart for some reason. just because they broke apart doesnt mean they switched gods.

the dark eldar came about when the fall happened, the first of the dark eldar brought his pleasure cult with him to a private realm in the warp, away from the song of slaanesh so they could regroup, eventually the warp twisted thier minds to what they are now (some people suspect that Asdrubael Vex himself was the one who was performing the cerimony that summoned Slaanesh (the source for this is a tale called the Torturers Tale) on the GW website.

Ultimately the two eldar races distrust eachother, but with the masses of corsairs and pirate raiding fleets, exodites and the likes... it is likely they intertwine to some degree.

F.Y.I. did you know that the reason the dark eldar raid and kill and torture is so they can consume the souls of thier victims to extend thier lives. (and torturing the victim bonds the soul to the torturer.)

And in a book i'm reading the dark elves let some space marines fight in an arena to summon a daemon

It's a book from the black library. It's called Warrior Coven, the sequel to Warrior brood, by C.S. Goto. It's about the deathwatch.
