 Help with a side project
« Thread Started on Nov 27, 2007, 3:27am »

So im heavily considering starting a deathwing army as a small(1000ish point) side project. ive got like 15 normal marines and an old vindicator that i 'inherited' from someone else. Im open to any suggestions as to what to get, what to replace, the only thing i really really want is a grand master, i looooove the model for it. I'm also open to other suggestions for a side army, the only real criteria I'm trying to fill is easily convertable and not a horde army

PS. cant be tau or chaos :(

well you could always do a concept eldar army, I personally have a few on the go. One i am converting all the bodys to look as frail as that 3 toughness should make them and still maintain that uber agility. The other one is one of symetry, the basic idea being 2 autarchs, and any abilities they take are 0 - 1 (so both cannot have mandiblasters) and then restricting my choices to include ONLY the squads that the autarchs have abilities and gear from (for example, if i took a banshee mask (totally recommended dude!) then i would be able to take banshees in the army)

Or a small craftworld army, you can build a very nice Ulthwe list with Eldrad Uthran, 2 - 20 guardian squads and 2 fire prisms (tricked properly = 1000 pts) but that is a little model heavy.

Also lately i have seen some really really decent concepts on Necron Army's (in particular, my fav was "happy" necrons, which had flowery details including petals around thier heads, and to top it off, they all had converted smiles!)

a Deathwing army can be a little hard on the wallet...
but the good news is that, since each model is worth a lot of points, there's mercifully few that you actually need.
(...and you won't ever get that "swarm" feel)

you'll need:
a - the Master of Deathwing guy (to turn your Terminators into Troop choices)
b - lots of Terminators (and, when i say "lots", i mean "lots")
c - Land Raiders or Predator (with Lascannons... for that extra punch)
d - something that either Infiltrates or Scouts that also can carry a Teleport Homer (like a Scout Squad with a Vetran Sgt)... so you can Deepstrike all up in your opponent's grill without dying to a bad scatter die roll.

the most successful Deathwing armies I've seen have no landraiders. instead they field a few dreadnaughts for extra firepower and vehicle toughness.

Gotta agree with striogi, i was going straight for dreadnaughts over tanks. I think im gonna buy the DA codex and a grand master and then go from there. As ive said i already have enough marines for a tactical squad but might find a way to make em look more scouty...not sure how yet tho

i was just thinking of saving your Elite FO slots for more Termies... but, hey, as long as you're packing Lascannons, you can't really go wrong!

I would go with a Deathwing army. I would if I wasn't so into my Blacktemplars. Maybe in the future.

I do have 2 of the Grand Master on the Jetbike models and they are so awesome, both with converted BT SM riding them if I ever opt to take a purely fast attack army he would be the commander.(house rules of course)

But all Dreads would be pretty cool.

Not to argue over the Dread/land raider issue, but man that 18" charge range for a unit of lightning claw armed termies (the assault ramp action) can decide games right there. Tough choice between them IMO. Although now that I have said that. . my terminator army uses 2 dreads and no land raiders, but it is not bought as a Deathwing army.

When offering criticism, keep in mind:
1. Constructive criticism is usefull if it includes ideas to make it better, if it does not, it is useless.
2. Think carefully about what your saying, if you are really criticising to say "I could do better", don't.
3. Criticism is taken better if the criticiser has done a similiar project.

i think he's talking about moving the Land Raider, disembarking, and then assaulting.

Technically, the charge range is 20 inches from the front of the vehicle at the start of the turn... because you are allowed to deploy your models within 2 inches of the departing hatch (experience from the Dark Eldar taught me this)
