Greetings!
For a long time I've been trying to find a scheme for my Tyranids that I was comfortable with but was simple enough that would allow me to paint up broods at a swift pace. About two years ago I settled on a dark brown skin with black carapace with green feathering/blotches and green details. It was simple to do. Spray it brown, wash with ink, paint the carapace black and do the green.
Something that has always been bugging me about it though was that I didn't really love the colour scheme. Yes, it had green - my favourite colour. And yes, it was quick to paint and therefore less likely to drive me mad. But I didn't fully like the scheme and ultimately, Tyranids being my absolute favourite army, this was unacceptable. So earlier this year, around November time, I spent a good look at different schemes trying to find something that I really liked.
One thing that caught my eye, and I bet a lot of peoples eyes, was Evan's thread and his lovely scheme which wonderfully combines the really dark, rich blue, and the vibrant whites, blues and yellows. I didn't want to replicate that scheme because it would be far too much work and I don't have the skill (or patience) to successfully pull it off either. What it did do was highlight what I wanted with my scheme. A dark inner layer, with brighter colours layered on top.
Upon deciding this, I very quickly decided that there was only one scheme available that I was happy to do (and which colours didn't clash with the colours of my other armies).
I decided to use the colours of Old One Eye.
I love this scheme. Not only does it allow me to use three different bright colours (red, yellow, blue), it retains a lot of versatility. I can darken or brighten any of these colours to designate different broods, or even change the patterns. Moreover, it allows me to try a similar kind of "night sky" pattern that Evan's scheme has, using yellow rather than blue/white.
It is also a lot of fun to paint! I started the repaint at the beginning of December and I've just finished my 200th model tonight.
The scheme itself is notably different to the official Old One Eye paint job. My skin is brighter, for example, and the blues offer a nice contrast to the red/yellow combination.
My favourite model of the lot so far is probably my Tyranid Prime, with an Epic Dominatrix head. Rwar!
