Evening! Sorry Xelmana if this is highjacking your thread in anyway its sorta on the same topicish with the same conclusion of awesomeness

I have also been contemplating this idea only instead of a Ship I plan on using GW Monster cases and then Just creating either Spore Mine or Mycetic Spores out of the Monster Cases. makes it so that i have trusted cases to do keep the mini's safe and just plan on ruffing the (please do not swear) out of the case to sculpt the (please do not swear) out of it. figured it would be allot easier then going from the ground up. Probably use miliput sense you can get it in 5lb containers

if it were me id use a instrument case as a base then use expanding foam to create the basic form. and you can sculpt the expanding foam once cured and its light weight. however once you start sculpting it you may get "pockmarks" from where the air bubbles in the expanding foam, but you could use those as "battle scars" or something. just my 2cents
