I've played against them a lot, and they're definitely a good list. Exceptionally good magic and some strong special choices make up for the conventional weaknesses of the undead in 8th ed.
They're very character centric, you will end up using at least one or two more characters than other armies tend to, but you can do pretty well without a tremendous amount of big blocks. The best part about them is the utter craziness of the specials and rares that don't detract from the army's playability by spending points on them.
I would advise getting the book first and giving them a shot. However, I must emphasise that their shooting phase really isn't all it's cracked up to be (maybe it's because I'm Ogres, but I rarely have problems shrugging off the damage) so don't expect miracles there. Still, they pack one nasty CC punch and are good at the age old trick of getting back up all the damn time...

I think you meant "monotony," not "monogamy." Although I suppose "monogamy" might also be appropriate in the sense that your list only plays with one other list.
On topic, sorry to hear about your problems with 40k. I can't really help you with Fantasy though.

tomb kings are basically your combo army. Your kings and priests make your skeletons awesome. Combines with awesome flankers and ressurection ability its makes a really strong army

Or you could go to GW's site to see his stuff too Khemri is a good place. Hopefully they arent as negative as the last time I was on...
If you serious, do yourself a favor and get yourself a Battleforce (Or Army box). You can never go wrong with that, as you will always need more skellies

For each and every one of the basic skeletons, make them archers. No other option is even close to being worthwhile.
Chariots are winsauce.
The mounted dudes are kinda middle ground; useful, sometimes not.
I'd make one of your warsphinxes a necrosphinx; it does what the warsphinx can't, which is fly over units, move fast, and deliver high strength chops. Heroic killing blow has its uses too.
[edit] Sure, my stuff shows up on the GW website but is it that good? Meh

yeah i was actually thinking of haveing one of each, but im still not overly sure, i mean the fact it can fly is a HUGE benifit. the warpshinx benifit being that it can hammer infantry in a second.... hmm i'll just magnatise it
hmm i was thinking of running a 40 block of hand weapon shield guys with a prince to use his weapon skill on them ? ever done this ?
yeah i was your stuff on there a little while back, looks good mate, simpe techniques, but very effective.

Egh...I've actually never used a prince or king, at least for my foot guys.
You'd have better results if he was in the chariots unit; at least they can hit like a ton of bricks. Skeleton warriors...are just naff. For two points more you might as well just go with archers, as their close combat effectiveness and durability is just about the same. At least with a bow they can do stuff before they get into combat
The thing is, nearly everything in the TK army can deal with infantry, but not much can deal with monsters, artillery, and other nasty things like that. This is what the Necrosphinx does better (it doesn't do it well, mind you <_<) than most other things. The casket of souls helps too.
